Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The old CONVENT of the Sisters of Charity dating from 1834 was partly rebuilt in 1882, to celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the Congregation. Around 1990 the windows were altered. To the original building, a large representative front wing with rich Eclectic elements was built on the north side. This section is located on the Kloosterstraat and connects, slightly set back, to the side facade of the convent wall.
Description
The two-storey building with rectangular plan comprises five bays and has a mansard roof covered with slate. The facade with central risalit and stepped gable is built in machine-made brick with plastered speckled courses and ornaments. On the ground floor originally contained multi-pane windows, now partly six-pane windows. The upper storey has six-pane windows. These were partly simplified around 1990. The plastered ornamental surround of the windows has a heavier execution on the ground floor than on the upper storey through the addition of oreillons and diamond heads. Breastwork and lintels are of hardstone. The risalit is emphasized on the ground floor by ornamental blocks on the sides, above only speckled courses. Above the upper storey window in the risalit is a polychrome coat of arms in relief and a text which reads: "Monseigneur J. Zwijsen Archbishop of Utrecht/Bishop of Den Bosch founded the congregation". Below the episcopal coat of arms its date, 23 Nov. 1832. The stepped gable is executed as a stepped gable with within it a pointed-arch niche with a white stone statue of St. Joseph with the Christ Child. On the base: "Former pupils 23 Nov. 1832". Below the moulded wooden gutter a substantial dentil course.
In the roof plane are four dormer windows with flanking walls, ornamental motifs and triangular tympanum. Internally the building has a corridor in common with the old convent of 1834. The corridor is here incorporated as a central corridor. The high spacious rooms are almost all simplified.
Valuation
The extension of the old convent section is of general importance. It has cultural-historical importance as an example of a spiritual development, in particular the foundation and growth of Catholic congregations and their care for education and charity, reflected in the gradual expansion of the complex, which is also of importance as an example of the typological development of congregational convents. It is also of architectural-historical importance because of its style. It is important because of its well-preserved exterior.
