De Rooms Katholieke kerk Sint Johannes de Doper betreft een driebeukige neogotische kruiskerk, gebouwd in 1875 naar ontwerp van architect J. Werten en is opgetrokken in rode baksteen (kruisverband). De toren met de hoofdentree telt vier geledingen, heeft overhoekse steunberen en een laag tentdak met balustrade en hoekpinakels. Naast de hoofdentree bevat de toren o.m. een bovenlicht in de vorm van een spitsboog, gevuld met glas-in-lood in een casement dat beëindigd wordt door een klimmende rand van spitsbogen. Op de toren een korte, met leien gedekte spits met smeedijzeren kruis. Van het basilicale schip zijn de zijbeuken aan weerszijden van de toren doorgetrokken. Het driezijdige koor telt één travee en heeft een driezijdige sluiting. De zijbeuken zijn op identieke wijze beëindigd, maar zijn één travee korter dan het koor. De bakstenen gevels bevatten enkele natuurstenen details (o.a. plint, afzaten, traceringen, torenbalustrade) en is uitgevoerd met sierfriezen en spitsboognissen. Het dak is belegd met leien in Maasdekking. Van de kerkinventaris zijn onder meer vermeldenswaard: twee zij-altaren (gewijd aan Maria en aan Jozef), preekstoel (1892), twee biechtstoelen (circa 1875), balustrade zangkoor (samengesteld, deels 18de- deels 19de-eeuws), bankenplan in middenschip en zijbeuken, eikenhouten kazuifelkast in sacristie, corpus in sacristie, Pietà rechts van ingangsportaal (1912), doopvont (1926), doophek met beeld van Johannes de Doper (laatste kwart 18de eeuw). Het eenklaviersORGEL van F.C. Smits, in 1848 gemaakt, is gaaf bewaard gebleven. Smits heeft een onderpositief voorbereid, maar voor dit tweede klavier geen windlade met pijpwerk geleverd.

The Roman Catholic Church of Sint Johannes de Doper is a three-aisled Neo-Gothic cruciform church, built in 1875 according to the design of architect J. Werten and is built in red brick (Flemish bond). The tower with the main entrance has four storeys, has diagonal buttresses and a low hip roof with balustrade and corner pinnacles. Beside the main entrance the tower contains, among others, a fanlight in the form of a pointed arch, filled with leaded glass in a casement that is terminated by a climbing series of pointed arches. On the tower a short spire covered with slate with wrought-iron cross. From the basilical nave the side aisles on either side of the tower are continued. The three-sided choir has one bay and has a three-sided closure. The side aisles are terminated in an identical manner, but are one bay shorter than the choir. The brick facades contain several natural stone details (including plinth, offsets, traceries, tower balustrade) and are executed with decorative friezes and pointed arch recesses. The roof is covered with slate in Maastricht covering. From the church furnishings the following are noteworthy: two side altars (dedicated to Mary and to Joseph), pulpit (1892), two confessionals (circa 1875), choir balustrade (composite, partly 18th- partly 19th-century), bench arrangement in nave and side aisles, oak-wood chasuble cupboard in sacristy, corpus in sacristy, Pietà to the right of entrance portal (1912), font (1926), baptismal gate with statue of John the Baptist (last quarter of 18th century). The single-manual ORGAN by F.C. Smits, made in 1848, has been well preserved. Smits prepared a lower positive, but did not supply a wind chest with pipework for this second manual.
Valuation
The Roman Catholic Church of Sint Johannes de Doper from 1875 according to the design of architect J. Werten is of general interest because of:
- the antiquity;
- the architectural integrity of exterior and interior;
- the furnishings which largely date from the time of construction and in combination with the architecture enhance the religious-historical significance of the church;
- the architectural-historical significance of the church, in particular as a masterpiece in the oeuvre of J. Werten and as a representative of a simple yet complete village church and as - an essential historical component of the complex which also includes the parsonage and churchyard.
