Inleiding

Introduction

Former LOADING AND UNLOADING PLACE near the Napoleonsweg at the end of the Kanaaldijk. In the Afwateringskanaal only two canal reaches were suitable for small-scale shipping. These reaches covered the section from the Noordervaart as far as the Napoleonsweg. In the third reach shipping traffic was impossible due to the steep gradient in the terrain from the Napoleonsweg (water level 26,10 AP) to the Maas (13,25 AP). Near the Napoleonsweg, in 1869 still the only paved road in Neer, a loading and unloading place thus came into being where the cargo was taken over by horse-drawn carts for distribution in the region.

The loading and unloading place was constructed between January and April 1857 in traditional style according to a design by Rijkswaterstaat. The work was probably executed by contractor J. Linskels from Blerick.

Following the completion of the canal Wessem-Nederweert in 1929, the Afwateringskanaal was gradually used less for shipping. After the canal was closed to shipping traffic in 1932, the loading and unloading place gradually fell into disuse. No remains of any loading and unloading installations have been found.

The canal continues its course to the Maas via a modernised culvert at the Napoleonsweg. This culvert falls outside national monument protection. Also the former harbour master's dwelling situated immediately beside the Napoleonsweg (later a café and now a residence) falls outside national monument protection.

Description.

Former loading and unloading place, consisting of two swing basins situated opposite each other for the mooring and departure of ships that maintained a freight service on the canal. The swing basins were dug as arched recesses in the canal wall and together form a local widening of the canal reach, which enabled the ships to turn. The quay walls of the double swing basin consist of an earthen slope with only a very slight rising gradient. The angle of slope is virtually equal to that of the canal reach itself.

Valuation.

The former loading and unloading place is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical values because of its direct relationship with the socio-economic development and reclamation of the Peel region and of the directly surrounding municipalities. As part of the Afwateringskanaal between the Noordervaart and the Maas, which as a spatial structure already forms a historical element, and because of its connection to the Napoleonsweg, the object is important as a particular expression of historical infrastructure in conjunction with the development of the transport sector in the Limburgian Peel region.

The object has ensemble values as an essential component of a recognisably preserved historical hydraulic engineering ensemble along and at the Afwateringskanaal. In particular the direct historical-spatial relationship with the nearby Napoleonsweg (with culvert) and former harbour master's dwelling is illustrative of this. The object is important because of the recognisably preserved landscape structure.
