Inleiding.
Vrijstaande kerktoren in de oude stadskern van Gennep. De toren vormt het restant van de voormalige Sint Martinuskerk die door oorlogsgeweld in de Tweede Wereldoorlog zwaar werd beschadigd. Met name het schip had zwaar te lijden en werd na de oorlog niet meer hersteld. De kerktoren dateert van 1869 en het ontwerp wordt toegeschreven aan dr. P.J.H. Cuypers.
Omschrijving.
Ranke kerktoren op een vierkant grondplan. De toren telt drie bouwlagen en heeft een ingesnoerde torenspits met leien. De toren heeft een opstand in baksteen met metselwerk in kruisverband. Op de hoeken van de toren verjongende steunberen gedekt met natuursteen. Op de overgang van de eerste naar de tweede en van de tweede naar de derde bouwlaag een natuurstenen waterlijst en decoratief metselwerk. De entreepartij bevindt zich aan de westzijde. Authentieke dubbele kerkdeuren met smeedijzeren beslag. Aan de noord- en zuidzijde een kleine uitbouw met steunberen en met twee maal twee spitsboogvormige glas-in-lood vensters. In de topgevel decoratief metselwerk. Topgevel gedekt met natuursteen. Aan de oostzijde bevond zich het schip, hier is thans een groot spitsboogvormig blind vlak voorzien van metselwerk van omstreeks 1946. Aan de benedenzijde van dit vlak een segmentboogvormige deuropening met hierin een dubbele houten deur van omstreeks 1946. In de tweede bouwlaag van de toren aan de zuid-, de west- en de noordzijde een spitsboogvormig spaarveld met hierin een viertal kleine nissen en decoratief metselwerk. In de derde bouwlaag in elk gevelvlak telkens twee hoge spitsboogvormige galmgaten voorzien van Louvre-luiken. Onder de dakrand kleine boogfriezen. Het dak wordt bekroond met een smeedijzeren kruis met daarop een windhaan. In het interieur is de trap naar de toren nog aanwezig.
Waardering.
De toren van de voormalige Sint Martinus kerk van Gennep bezit cultuurhistoriche waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een religieuze en typologische ontwikkeling. De architectuurhistorische waarden worden bepaald door het belang van de kerktoren voor de bovenregionale geschiedenis van de architectuur; vanwege de hoogwaardige esthetische kwaliteiten van het ontwerp, en vanwege de toeschrijving van het ontwerp aan dr. P.J.H. Cuypers. Het relict bezit ensemblewaarden door de markante en beeldbepalende situering in de dorpskern van Gennep; als landmark en herinnering aan de zware verwoestingen die tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog werden aangericht in Noord-Limburg. Freestanding church tower in the old city centre of Gennep. The tower is the remnant of the former Sint Martinuskerk which was severely damaged by war violence in the Second World War. Description.
Slender church tower on a square ground plan. The tower has three storeys and features a tapered spire clad with slate. The tower has a façade in brickwork with masonry in bond. On the corners of the tower, tapering buttresses clad with natural stone. At the transition from the first to the second and from the second to the third storey, a natural stone drip moulding and decorative masonry. The entrance is located on the west side. Authentic double church doors with wrought-iron fittings. On the north and south sides a small extension with buttresses and with twice two pointed-arch shaped leaded-light windows. Decorative masonry in the gable. Gable clad with natural stone. On the east side was the nave; here there is now a large pointed-arch shaped blank field provided with masonry from approximately 1946. At the base of this field a segmental-arch shaped doorway with a double wooden door from approximately 1946. In the second storey of the tower on the south, west and north sides a pointed-arch shaped spandrel with four small niches and decorative masonry. In the third storey in each wall plane two tall pointed-arch shaped sound holes with Louvre louvers. Below the eaves small arch friezes. The roof is crowned with a wrought-iron cross with a weather vane. In the interior, the staircase to the tower is still present.
Valuation.
The tower of the former Sint Martinuskerk of Gennep possesses cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a religious and typological development. The architectural-historical values are determined by the importance of the church tower for the supra-regional history of architecture; due to the high-quality aesthetic qualities of the design, and due to the attribution of the design to Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers. The relic possesses ensemble values through its striking and image-defining situation in the city centre of Gennep; as a landmark and reminder of the severe devastation inflicted during the Second World War in North Limburg.
