Inleiding.

Introduction.

STATION BUILDING of the Fifth Class type built around 1867 after a standard design of the State Railways by architect K.H. van Brederode. The building in a sober Waterstaatsstijl style stands along the line Venlo - Maastricht, which was opened in 1865 and was built with uniform stations, whereby those of the fourth and fifth class types were applied to rural municipalities. The station is situated east of the centre of Echt and stands free between the railway line and the Stationsweg running parallel to it. The main form of the building has been well preserved. In 1911, according to standard design, the central section of the building was heightened. In 1923, an extension was realised in the corner of the risalit, which was removed during restoration and renovation in 1989. The building is now internally fully modernised, except on the upper storey where the layout of the residential building from 1911 has been largely retained.

Description.

STATION BUILDING of the Fifth Class type on a composite, symmetrically arranged floor plan with a three-storey central section with risalits on the front and rear sides and two storeys and an attic storey in the narrow side sections. On either side, broad single-storey side wings are attached to these. All building sections are finished with projecting gabled roofs. The ridge direction of the central roof stands perpendicular to the track, those of the roofs on the side wings run parallel to it. The roof slopes are covered with cross tiles and water drainage takes place via gutters which, like the wind braces, are moulded. In the slopes of the tall side sections there are simple roof dormers. The facades are built in brickwork in English bond which is completely covered under a smooth render layer and are provided with a hardstone plinth. The facade openings are predominantly closed with a light segmental arch and contain windows and doors replaced in 1989, which, like the original specimens, contain double casement windows and fanlights. The windows have hardstone drip mouldings. In the side facades of the central risalit and side sections, ornamental wall anchor rosettes of cast iron are located at the level of the floor beams. The FRONT FACADE (track side) consists of a central risalit that is accentuated by a tall spandrel, surrounded by corner pilasters which at the top of the facade with a climbing tooth transition into a segmental arch. Within this spandrel there is in the first storey a door with fanlight. In the second storey there is, as the only classical detail, a round-arched twin window, provided with pilasters having capital- and basement-like mouldings. The windows are original and have a six-pane glazing bar division and two-pane fanlights. Below the bifora a decorative hardstone drip moulding on three moulded hardstone consoles. In the third storey there is a squat segmental arch window with cross window. In the side sections there are in the first and second storey segmental arch-closed windows as described, whereby the window in the first storey on the left is blind. The lower wings each have a large door under a segmental arch fanlight. The REAR FACADE (Stationsweg) has a layout comparable to the front facade but simpler in design, with a less projecting central risalit. The entrance in the central section has a surround and canopy from the nineteen-fifties. In the first storey of the right side section there is a door behind which the entrance to the upper residential space is now housed. In each of the side wings a segmental arch-closed window as previously mentioned.

The RIGHT SIDE FACADE and LEFT SIDE FACADE of the central section contain on the track side in the first and second storey segmental arch-closed windows as previously mentioned. The side sections contain above the roofs of the side wings equally segmental arch-closed windows and at the top a four-pane oculus in each gable end. The end facades of the single-storey side wings are blank except for a round ventilation opening in the top of the right end facade. The INTERIOR of the station on the ground floor as regards layout and finish is completely modernised. On the upper storeys (residential building) the early twentieth-century layout, by contrast, is nearly intact and contains amongst other things original moulded door frames, part of the original staircase and several original panelled doors.

Valuation.

The STATION BUILDING in Echt possesses general significance and is of architectural-historical value as a well-preserved main form and a rare example of a station building from the second half of the nineteenth century, which is characteristic of the sober standardised architecture of the State Railways in this period. The station has ensemble value in connection with the other historical stations preserved along this line, as a functional and characteristic component of the railway line Venlo-Maastricht. The building possesses landmark value as part of the historical building stock at the Stationsweg. The building is of cultural-historical value as part of an infrastructural and typological development, connected with the rise of the railways and typical of the period between approximately 1860 and 1900.
