Inleiding

Introduction

BANK BUILDING of the former HAV-Bank (Hollandse Algemeene Verzekerings Bank) with shops, built in 1933-1935 after a design by Hilversum architect W.M. Dudok in a Business Expressionist style. The building was extended in 1953 after a design by Dudok.

The building is prominently situated on the Gerrit Verboonstraat, a busy thoroughfare between the centre of Schiedam and the harbour and residential areas to the west. The building occupies the entire northern building line of the street and also forms the termination of the long, irregularly developed building block between Tuinlaan and Buitenhaven. On the east side the building borders on the Buitenhaven; the façade is also the quay wall along the water. On the west side the building borders on the Plantage, an elongated urban park designed by J.D. Zocher jr.

NB: In 1997 the office section was converted into an apartment complex, after a design by the Amsterdam architectural firm Van Moort and partners (project architect P.W.J. Hormeijer). Volumes were added to the roof of the entire building. Steel structures were placed along the rear façades to provide access and create outdoor space. With the exception of the structure on the Buitenhaven, the extensions are invisible or barely visible from the street. The façades of the extensions are built in yellow facing brick and the dimensions of the windows are as far as possible identical to the original design.

Description

The oldest part of the former bank building (1933-1935) is constructed from an almost L-shaped floor plan. Along the Gerrit Verboonstraat an elongated building volume of 49 x 15 metres with three storeys on a basement. This main volume follows the building line, which ends by means of a curve at the Tuinlaan. The ground floor is entirely occupied by six shops with a continuous frontage of shop windows. On the upper storeys the actual office spaces, which originally consisted of large staff halls along the front façade and small rooms along the rear façade and at the corners. At an angle to this main volume and directly situated on the Lange Haven, a small rectangular building section of 20 x 11 metres with two storeys on a basement. (Originally containing offices and consulting rooms.) At the corner at the bridge head, where both building volumes interlock, the entrance with hall and staircases for public and staff. This corner was until the 1953 extension the only part of the building with four storeys. In the opposite corner at the Tuinlaan likewise a staircase with a secondary entrance on the ground floor.

The structure of the building consists entirely of reinforced concrete, with provision made for possible extension by one storey. Extremely modern and a technical masterpiece is the water piping system incorporated in the concrete for cooling the building. The façades of the building are constructed all around from straw-yellow glazed tiles, specially fired for this building. The façade on the Gerrit Verboonstraat passes by means of a curve into the short façade on the Tuinlaan. On the ground floor a continuous frontage of shop windows beneath a substantial projecting concrete canopy. The shops are separated from each other by partition walls, which like the plinths are clad with polished black Swedish granite. The window displays are articulated by means of a broad display window placed at an angle to the building line to the left of a recessed shop door. To the right against the partition walls half-height display cases. The pavements are laid in natural stone. On the underside of the canopy a cladding of glass mosaic in white and pastel colours. The rightmost shop has a larger area and extends beyond the rounded corner. The shop windows follow the curve and to the right of that, on the Tuinlaan, is a portico providing access to the secondary entrance. On the first and second storeys, as wide as the shop front, two combined window bands are placed, which project slightly. The bands consist of an uninterrupted series of tall windows with lower and upper lights and are executed in double steel frames. The windows on the first storey are slightly taller than those on the second. Between the bands a parapet of white-painted artificial stone panels. At the top a concrete lintel, which together with the parapet on the first storey, is continued half a metre along the façade. The window bands are surrounded by solid façade sections, terminated by an artificial stone roof edge. On the left on the Gerrit Verboonstraat on the ground floor the main entrance of the building. The black granite from the shop windows is continued here in a raised plinth, into which, beneath a concrete lintel, the entrance arrangement is set. This consists of from left to right: two high-set windows; double glazed entrance doors and an equally high window. To the left of the entrance, adjoining the bridge head and nearly at right angles to the front façade, a high-built wall terminated by artificial stone, with in it a shallow display case in aluminium. Top left in the façade a clock. Hands and round hour markings are applied directly to the façade without a dial. On the Tuinlaan the façade ends in a vertical façade section containing a long steel frame of the secondary staircase. The façade of this main volume is terminated by a raised concrete edge on square columns, which is 'curled up' on the east side and on the west side follows the curve of the façade. Between the columns wide slots, which suggest the impression of a pergola from the street. Originally the edge was continued in a covering of the roof terrace. The elongated building volume has on the Buitenhaven a tall-rising window section beneath a projecting concrete roof edge. The window has strong vertical articulation through elongated steel mullions. At the bottom an inclined wall section rising from the ground floor towards the bridge head. To the left of this the lower building volume along the Buitenhaven, which projects slightly forward relative to the main volume. The façade consists at the bottom of a quay wall of elongated natural stone rustic blocks. Above this a continuous series of low basement windows, separated from each other by white pilasters. The masonry above is clad with identical yellow tiles as the other façades. On ground and first floor continuous series of tall windows between white pilasters. On the roof of this building section, at the place where both volumes meet, a tall square mast, which extends far above the roof edge. The metal structure ends in a vertical lantern, consisting of elongated frosted glass panels, with on top a slender weather vane.

In the interior the entrance, the former public hall and two staircases are located, which are largely in their original state. The entrance on the ground floor has a counter wall on the right and connects on the left by means of a staircase along the tall bay on the Buitenhaven to the double-height public hall on the first storey. Floors and wall claddings are covered with white marble slabs (presumably Calacatta). Along the staircase a railing of polished tubular steel. Behind the hall and public hall, separated by means of a steel interior window, the staircase in the corner of the building. At the rear façade daylight enters by means of a continuous vertical window. The staircase has white tiled wall cladding and steps of grey granite. The floors and landings are laid in a chequerboard pattern with white and straw-yellow tiles. Along the stairs a continuous metal balustrade of polished tubular steel. The staircase on the west side is executed in corresponding style.

The building section on the Tuinlaan (1953) consists of four storeys on a basement. The architecture of the extension connects seamlessly to the existing building. Adjoining the façade on Tuinlaan a black natural stone plinth with small basement windows and above masonry clad with the same yellow tiles as the existing structure. The transition is marked by a recessed vertical strip with on the right a hollow rounded corner. In the façade on the ground floor a continuous window band with tall windows between white pilasters. To the right of this a passage through to the courtyard, consisting of a recessed tilting door beneath a thin projecting concrete canopy and flanked on the left by a rounded corner. On first and second storeys continuing window bands, with double steel frames, interrupted by white pilasters. The arrangement of windows is identical to the windows in the main volume. The top storey is set back behind a shallow terrace and has a full-height steel window with square window divisions. Along the terrace a railing of round steel. At the top a concrete canopy, clad on the underside with glass mosaic.

Valuation

Former bank building with shops built in the period 1933-1935 and extended in 1953 after a design by Hilversum architect W.M. Dudok in a Business Expressionist style, of general importance due to cultural-historical, architectural-historical and townscape value. The building is also of significance as part of the spatial-economic development of the city of Schiedam in the first half of the twentieth century, because of the integrity of the exterior and because of its significance for the architect's oeuvre.
