Inleiding

Introduction

In 1885 constructed DWELLING HOUSE of the type townhouse, with associated stoop and bollards. The house, with its front facade facing the canal, was built in the style of the then current Eclecticism, to a design by Delft architect J.P. Henneveld. The building with its front facade facing the canal forms part of a closed facade wall in the protected townscape of Delft.

Description

Dwelling house constructed from a rectangular ground plan with one storey above a mansard roof covered with Dutch tiles and containing a roof dormer. The house has a stone stoop with four stone bollards. The three-bay front facade is constructed in fine brickwork and is enlivened by accents of white painted plasterwork. The facade has a stone plinth and a basement with two arched windows with glazing bars in internally moulded frames. The front door is positioned to the right in a risalit, above a stone staircase. The richly worked door is provided among other things with a copper handle and a curved pediment resting on fluted pilasters. The door stands beneath a moulded hood and arched fanlight, within a moulded surround with a hood. The two windows above a continuous transom situated on the piano nobile have similar surrounds, as do the three storey windows. The storey windows are furthermore provided with a window head. The facade is terminated by an entablature, which is composed of a moulded lower edge, a flat frieze with a stepped projection over the risalit and a moulded cornice resting on a dentil moulding and carved brackets. From the front roof slope projects a wooden roof dormer with two round-arch windows standing between small pilasters and a pediment. The plastered rear facade with sham joints and right-angled window openings is partially hidden from view by a brick extension.

The interior has been preserved in its original state only in part. The entrance hall has a floor and wall panelling of marble and a stucco ceiling with decoration. The draught doors are not the originals, behind which is a staircase with marble wall leading to the substantially altered basement and a partially marble scallop staircase with moulded handrails on iron balusters to the piano nobile and the storey. The staircase to the storey has a fine, carved neo-Baroque newel post with among other things a griffin. The doors at the corridor of the piano nobile are original panelled doors within moulded frames. In the interconnected rooms on this level, apart from the sliding doors, little of the original has survived. The rooms on the storey still contain some original stucco ceilings and panelled doors. The attic storey has been almost completely modernized.
