Inleiding

Description
Introduction
SCHOOL BUILDING for the gymnasium school type, built in 1890 in an architectural style related to Eclecticism with influences from Neo-Dutch Renaissance. The Delft Gymnasium was built according to a design by architect C.J. de Bruyn Kops, who was municipal architect of Delft in the period 1856-1891. This is the last design by De Bruyn Kops for the municipality of Delft. The Neo-Renaissance influences are particularly strong in the characteristic, richly detailed front facade with the entrance in the central risalit featuring a 'triumphal arch motif'. The Delft gymnasium evolved in 1839 from the Latin School. The letter Y in the front facade, a symbol for the Latin School, refers to this historical connection. After being housed at several locations, a completely new building was erected on the Westvest with its front facade facing the city wall, which was only demolished here in 1928. In 1950 the school was named Grotius Gymnasium. In 1968 the school left the building and it was designated for housing businesses.
The building stands on a plot bounded by a wall (brick with half-round coping) opposite the Central Station dating from 1885 and forms part of the eastern facade wall of the Westvest in the protected townscape of Delft.
Description
A composite school building erected from a roughly H-shaped ground plan with two storeys, covered with Dutch tile hipped roofs. The facades are largely constructed in fair-faced brickwork (cross bond, struck joint). The building volume has a symmetrical front facade and stands on a rectangular ground plan. It is topped by a hipped roof and possesses on the rear side a simple rectangular intermediate section, which projects slightly at the height of the stairwell located to the north. The intermediate section connects the front volume with an equally rectangular ground plan volume beneath a transversely placed hipped roof. The roof above the front volume is provided with symmetrically placed brick chimneys on the ridge. The wooden, composite and overhanging eave cornice of the avant-corps forms a unit with the continuous entablature, which is carried across the facade on both sides. The wooden, composite eave cornices with gutter of the remaining building components rest on wooden brackets. A wooden roof dormer with slate-clad flanks, pilasters and two four-part windows intersects the eastern slope of the rear volume. The straight-edged windows in stretches contain two-pane casement windows with two-pane fanlights and have sandstone drip mouldings.
The facades of the front volume are characterized by the alternation of fair-faced brickwork and plastered components. They are horizontally articulated by continuous bands at the height of the plinth, the storey height and beneath the eave. The corners are accentuated by rusticated pilasters on the first storey and pilasters with bands on the second storey.
The symmetrical front facade consists of a richly detailed central risalit, which is built out above the eave line with two window axes on either side. The first storey is executed with stone courses and the straight-edged windows stand under stretches with plastered blocks with diamond heads. The second storey contains straight-edged windows crowned by a cornice. The central risalit is executed in plaster on the first storey with rusticated corners with in front of it a triumphal arch with four Doric half-columns. On either side of the semicircular arch is a cartouche with scrollwork and the inscription "18" and "90". In the frieze are the words: "Gymnasium". The semicircular entrance contains a straight-edged double door with segmental fanlight. On the upper floor is a composite, straight-edged window, crowned by a head piece and a triangular pediment. The intermediate mullions are detailed as fantasy pilasters. In the centre the three-part window contains three standing lights with fanlights. On either side are individual windows with lights under fanlights. The risalit is terminated by a gable with stone courses in the form of a neck gable, which is crowned by a broken triangular pediment and a spout-shaped termination with a medallion and a segmental pediment.
The north and south facades are blind.
In the left side facade (Barbarasteeg) at the height of the stairwell there are two semicircular windows in both storeys with lights divided by glazing bars.
In the interior, the following are of note: the draught vestibule, the centrally located corridor with natural stone flooring and high plinth which continues in the spandrels, the stairwell with simple staircases and wooden balustrade, as well as the joinery of the casement windows.
Around the perimeter of the plot stands a brick wall with half-round coping.
