Inleiding

Introduction

COSTER'S DWELLING with access to the Old Catholic church behind it, with front facade from 1881 in the style of Neo-Gothic and built under the direction of builder H. Beijen. The building has a presumed seventeenth-century or older core. The coster's dwelling belongs to the Old Catholic church of the Holy Mary and Holy Ursula behind it (national monument no. 11709) and the adjacent parsonage (national monument 11710).

The coster's dwelling and parsonage fit into the southern facade wall of the enclosed Bagijnhof in the protected townscape of Delft.

In the natural stone plinth is carved the text: "The first stone laid by the church board on the 31st day of May 1881 Ch. A. H. Pastor".

Description

The coster's dwelling is constructed on a rectangular plan with two storeys and a gabled roof with the ridge at right angles to the Bagijnhof. The roof is closed at the front to the pointed gable and is finished with a hipped form at the rear. In front of the dwelling lies a hard stone step.

The front facade is constructed in fair-faced brickwork (running bond with struck joint) with a low, natural stone plinth. The simple pointed gable (with stepped base) is covered with natural stone mouldings and has ornamental wall anchors. The top is crowned with a wrought-iron cross. The facade is articulated horizontally by natural stone drip mouldings. Verticality is emphasised by corner mouldings, in which the drip mouldings do not continue. Roof covered with Dutch tiles.

The asymmetrical facade has on the first storey a centrally placed square-headed window in shallow recess, which contains a cross-shaped wooden frame. The frames are inward-opening wooden frames with wooden frames with mortise and tenon joints. All frames are fitted with leaded glass. In front of the lower frames is a wrought-iron grille screen fitted. The window has a simple relieving arch and natural stone sill. To the left of the window is the access (with a single door) to the coster's dwelling, while to the right is the access to the hidden church with a double door. The accesses have substantial natural stone lintels and pointed-arch-shaped fanlights with tracery in quatrefoil and circular form. The braced doors are fitted with richly detailed hinges and fastenings. The two square-headed windows on the upper floor have depressed relieving arches with natural stone coping stones and brick arch fields in decorative bond. The square-headed window at the top also contains a cross frame. The pointed-arch-shaped relieving arch contains decorative bond in yellow and red and natural stone quoins and coping stones. The rear facade is partly obscured from view by the outbuilding of one storey between coster's dwelling, parish house and church. On the upper floor two square-headed window openings with frames with mortise and tenon joints. Directly below the wooden gutter line smaller window openings. Large, old staple anchors are incorporated.

The interior has largely retained its layout with a central transverse staircase at the centre, the lower steps of which run slightly askew. The corridor of the dwelling, like the corridor to the church, has a hard stone floor.

Valuation

The coster's dwelling of the Old Catholic church at Bagijnhof 21;23 is of general importance because of its cultural and architectural-historical value

- as an expression of a specific function and as part of the already state-protected church complex.

- as an example of the architectural style, namely Neo-Gothic and because of its characteristic main form, use of materials, detailing and interior and the high degree of authenticity thereof.

The coster's dwelling has urban planning value because of its visually defining location at the Bagijnhof in the protected townscape of Delft and the spatial-functional and visual relationship with the church and the parsonage.
