Omschrijving
Inleiding
In 1946 verbouwde ir. M.Th.

Description
Introduction
INFANTRY BARRACKS of the type from 1845 in craft-traditional building style, presumably designed by Cornelis Zemel and under city architect P.L. Smits. This architect produced several, unexecuted designs in a building style related to Neo-Classicism. The ultimately realised, strictly symmetrical and austere building without specific detailing likewise shows a building style related to Neo-Classicism. The barracks was rebuilt in 1864 under the direction of a military engineer architect, P. Baart de la Faille and raised with one additional storey to two storeys. In doing so the roof truss structure with Philibert trusses was retained.
In 1923 the barracks was condemned for military use. The association for aftercare for assistance to the physically and mentally disabled - from 1950 the Van der Wouden foundation - decided in 1926 to operate a workshop for the mentally disabled and subsequently rented the former barracks from the municipality. In 1946 ir. M.Th. Elout rebuilt the former barracks to make the building more suitable as a care home. During this rebuild, among other things the wooden beam layers and floors were replaced by reinforced concrete floors. Subsequently the building - and particularly its internal layout - was adapted several more times. Additionally, among other things the detached wooden thatched shed behind the main building (at the Kantoorgracht) was rebuilt as an administrative office.
The detached building forms the northern wall of the square called Paardenmarkt, which arose following a gunpowder explosion in 1654, and lies within the protected townscape of Delft. To the north of the barracks the plot is bounded by the Kantoorgracht.
On the eastern side are the buildings of the 'Artillery or Artillery Magazine of Holland' (at Paardenmarkt 1a; 1b and approx.). The Artillery Magazine of Holland provided for the manufacture and storage of weapons and ammunition and the training of military personnel. The complex of warehouses of the Artillery Magazine from 1671 with surrounding buildings is protected at national level under monument no. 12151 and serves as a dependency of the Army Museum. Between the Paardenmarkt and the artillery magazine lay the Lakengracht, dammed up at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Given the later rebuilds the protection is limited to the volume at the Paardenmarkt, which is roofed with Philibert trusses. More precisely described it comprises on the left side gable (east side) the four rightmost bays and on the right side gable (west side) the three leftmost bays.
The building stands within the protected townscape of Delft.
Description
The two-storey high building is constructed from - broadly speaking - a rectangular ground plan with a similar, asymmetrically placed courtyard. The wing at the Paardenmarkt has a hipped roof, into which the hipped roofs of the perpendicular eastern and western wings engage. These roofs are covered with smeared Dutch tiles. The front hipped roof and the western roof hipped of the wing at the Paardenmarkt are both interrupted by one roof dormer with six-light casement windows. The western wing has a largely flat roof. The gables in fair brickwork with smoothed plinth contain round-headed windows under a lintel with 12-light sash windows with sliding lower and upper sash and brick drip stones and cast-iron wall anchors. On each storey of the fifteen-axis front facade there is one window per axis with the exception of the middle, where on the ground floor the internal entrance is located. The filling of the entrance was altered during the rebuild to care home, but still has the original facade opening and the simple classical cornice dating from 1845 on volute-shaped consoles.
The first three axes of the asymmetrical left side gable (east side) contain two round-headed entrances with wooden doors and fanlights and on the upper floor three windows.
The asymmetrical right side gable (west side), which given the building traces in the gable has often been altered, has fifteen windows on the upper floor. On the ground floor the windows are alternated with several round-headed entrances with wooden doors under two-part fanlights.
The gables at the courtyard and the interior were substantially altered during the 1950 rebuild.
Valuation
The former infantry barracks from 1845, which was substantially rebuilt in 1863, is of general importance because of its cultural-historical, architectural-historical and urban planning value. The barracks is of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a specific function and because of the significance of the barracks for the history of the city. The barracks is of architectural-historical importance as an example of a building type and because of the high degree of integrity of the main form, detailing and material use. The building has urban planning and ensemble value because of its visually characterising location at the Paardenmarkt within the protected townscape of Delft and because of the spatial-functional and visual relationship with the Artillery Magazine.
The building is also of importance because of the recognisability and reasonable degree of integrity of the front facade.
