Inleiding
Het POORTGEBOUW van het complex 'Garage Centraal' aan de Koornmarkt is gebouwd in 1926 in opdracht van G.C. Jense naar ontwerp van de architect L.C. Kalis. In het poortgebouw werden aan weerszijden van de doorrit naar het achterterrein autoshowrooms ingericht. Thans zijn in deze ruimten kantoren gevestigd. In de onderdoorgang is een bedrijfsruimte gecreëerd, waarbij de inrit goed herkenbaar is gebleven. De twee verdiepingen bevatten bovenwoningen. De op de gracht gerichte voorgevel van het gebouw is ontworpen in de stijl van de late Amsterdamse School, met een rijke, decoratieve en representatieve afwerking. Het poortgebouw bevindt zich in het beschermde stadsgezicht van Delft.
Omschrijving
Het poortgebouw is aan de oostzijde van de Koornmarkt gesitueerd en maakt deel uit van een gesloten gevelwand. Het gebouw heeft een U-vormige plattegrond en telt drie bouwlagen onder een plat dak. De gevels zijn gemetseld in rode baksteen in kettingverband.
De asymmetrische voorgevel (westzijde) heeft vier traveeën, waarvan de derde van links licht risaleert, breder is en de doorrit naar het achterterrein markeert, mede door een afwijkende gevelindeling en bekroning. De middenrisaliet is voorzien van twee licht risalerende hoekpilasters met expressief metselwerk in de kapitelen. De doorrit is afsluitbaar door middel van een meerdelige paneeldeur, wegklapbaar via een metalen rails in het betegelde oppervlak van het binnenterrein. De gevel is geplaatst op een hardstenen plint. De overgang van de eerste naar de tweede bouwlaag is gemarkeerd door een brede, geverfde betonnen latei. Een overstekende houten bakgoot vormt samen met een vertikaal gemetseld bakstenen fries de gevelbekroning van de teruggelegen geveldelen. De middenrisaliet is bekroond door een smalle geverfde betonnen latei en een kepervormige, in vertikaal verband gemetselde bakstenen top.
De drie voormalige showrooms zijn voorzien van grote rechthoekige vensteroppervlakken, met drie- of vierdelige bovenlichten met een invulling van glas-in-lood. Diepe inpandige portieken geven toegang tot de showrooms en het trappenhuis van de bovenwoningen. Deze portieken zijn voorzien van geometrische vloeren en tegellambrizeringen, en originele houten paneeldeuren met dubbele bovenlichten met glas-in-lood. In de tweede en derde bouwlaag zijn vensters met drie- en vierdelige rechthoekige schuiframen aangebracht, die in de voorgevel zijn voorzien van glas-in-lood bovenlichten. Uitzondering hierop vormt de middenrisaliet, waarin drie overhoeks geplaatste erkers zich over de tweede en derde bouwlaag uitstrekken. Glas-in-lood decoraties verschaffen het achter de gevel gesitueerde trappenhuis een kleurrijke sfeer.
De asymmetrische achtergevel is evenals de voorgevel opgebouwd uit vier niet gelijkmatige traveeën. De twee buitenste traveeën risaleren, hiermee de U-vormige plattegrond vormend. De linker hoekrisaliet telt twee bouwlagen, de rechter hoekrisaliet drie bouwlagen. Deze hoekrisalieten grenzen aan de één bouwlaag hoge garageboxen aan weerszijde van het binnenterrein.
De linker en rechter zijgevel zijn verbonden met de belendende bebouwing en zijn niet zichtbaar.

Description
The gate building is situated on the eastern side of the Koornmarkt and forms part of a closed facade wall. The building has a U-shaped floor plan and comprises three storeys under a flat roof. The facades are constructed of red brick in chain bond.
The asymmetrical front facade (west side) has four bays, of which the third from the left projects slightly, is wider and marks the passageway to the rear grounds, also through a different facade layout and crowning. The central projection is provided with two slightly projecting corner pilasters with expressive brickwork in the capitals. The passageway can be closed by means of a multi-part panelled door, foldable away via metal rails in the tiled surface of the inner grounds. The facade rests on a sandstone plinth. The transition from the first to the second storey is marked by a broad, painted concrete lintel. An overhanging wooden roof gutter forms together with a vertically laid brick frieze the facade crown of the recessed facade sections. The central projection is crowned by a narrow painted concrete lintel and a herringbone-patterned, vertically laid brick top.
The three former showrooms are provided with large rectangular window areas, with three- or four-part fanlights with leaded glass infill.
