Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The FARMHOUSE, consisting of a Flemish barn with side aisle and cross-wing with intermediate section on the south side of the Nieuwe Veerdam at Zuidland, is together with the farmhouse 'De Zuidhollandse Hoeve' located on the opposite side a rare farmhouse type in the region. The farmhouse was built in 1871, commissioned by J. van Beek Jz. and C.A. van Beek Jd. The cross-wing and the intermediate section are executed in an eclectic architectural style with influences from Neo-Classicism. The barn features a traditional artisanal design.
The farmhouse is no longer in use as such; the cross-wing and intermediate section were converted between 1980-1990 into practice space and residential accommodation. The exterior of the intermediate section was modified on the west side in this process. The original thatched roof of the barn is covered with corrugated sheets.
In front of the cross-wing lies a shallow garden with orchard. A driveway covered with clinker bricks is located to the east of the cross-wing and leads to the side aisle of the Flemish barn. The yard at the rear is surfaced with concrete. Along the entire west gable a decorative and herb garden has recently been laid out.
Description
The farmhouse has a floor plan composed of the rectangle of the cross-wing, the smaller rectangle of the intermediate section, perpendicular to the rectangle of the cross-wing, and the broad and elongated rectangle of the barn with side aisle. Finally, on the west side of the barn stands the rectangle of the former pigsty. The cross-wing has two storeys under a gabled roof, the intermediate section one storey under a gabled roof and the pigsty one storey under a hipped roof. These roofs are covered with smoked Dutch tiles. In the roof section of the intermediate section an internal balcony has been installed. The barn has one storey under a mansard gabled roof covered with corrugated sheets, supported by a double cross-beam on posts.
The facades are built in red brick in Flemish bond. The facades of the residential section are provided with brickwork ornamentation through an alternation with yellow brick in the segmental arches above the T-sash windows and around the circular windows in the gable ends. The residential section has a rendered, grey-painted plinth. The cross-wing is provided with rendered, white-painted corner pilasters, articulated by means of ashlar joints. The cross-wing is further articulated horizontally by a cordon and a moulded cornice.
The symmetrical front facade (north side) of the cross-wing is five bays wide, of which the middle one slightly projects. The double panelled door with gently arched fanlight is framed by a moulded rendered panel, provided with pilasters with panels. The pilasters continue in the second storey as pilaster strips, which together with a round-arch frieze frame a coupled round-arch window. The remaining bays are provided with T-windows with sash windows in both storeys.
In the asymmetrical front facade of the barn, on the left is the double wooden barn door which provides access to the side aisle. Above the door is a decorative round-arch window. In the facade two smaller round-arch windows are also installed. To the right next to the wide barn door is a small rectangular door with fanlight. In the wall space above this door is the commemorative stone of the first stone-laying.
The asymmetrical wooden rear facade of the barn is covered with thatch above a brick plinth.
The asymmetrical left side facade consists of the facade of the cross-wing, the recessed facade of the intermediate section and the projecting facade of the barn. The facade of the cross-wing counts one bay, with a window with T-frame in both storeys. In the single storey of the facade of the neck section stand four arched windows, all with T-frames. The right-hand closed window is of later date. The facade of the barn is articulated by eight elongated wall anchors (ornamental) at the location of the beams. The five right-hand bays are provided with arched cast-iron windows. The left bay is without windows. The remaining bays are provided with double, opening barn doors in a round arch.
The asymmetrical right side facade features essentially a comparable structure with the left side facade, with the exception of the former pigsty which projects in relation to the most left gable section of the barn. The facade of the cross-wing is identical to the left side facade. The facade of the neck section is of subordinate importance as a result of the recent conversion. The former function of the pigsty is still discernible from the facades: two arched low gable openings - now bricked up, are flanked by two small round openings - now likewise bricked up. The facade of the barn, which belongs to the side where the cattle shed is located, is provided with round-arch windows.
