Inleiding
WOONHUIS uit 1893, dat sinds 1911 grotendeels in gebruik is als sociëteit voor "De Groote Sociëteit", is gebouwd naar ontwerp van de architect Johannes de Bie in Eclectische stijl. Hij maakte ook de tekeningen voor de verbouw van 1911 waarbij de pui links van de ingang tot stand kwam.
Het pand ligt in het beschermde gezicht en is gesitueerd aan de Lingehaven. Het maakt onderdeel uit van de westelijke, gesloten gevelwand.
N.B. De achtergevel heeft enkele moderne toevoegingen, die voor de bescherming van ondergeschikt belang zijn.
Omschrijving
Tweelaags pand vanaf een grofweg rechthoekige plattegrond opgetrokken in rode baksteen (staand verband met knipvoeg) met een natuurstenen, decoratief gehakte plint en waterdorpel. Het afgeknotte schilddak is gedekt met rubberoid-tegels en heeft een dakgoot uitgevoerd als kroonlijst steunend op consoles met bladmotief.
Voorgevel (oost) met hoog oplopend middenrisaliet waarin de entree geplaatst is. De deur en het T-venster daarboven zijn gevat in een gepleisterde omlijsting, vormgegeven als hoofdgestel met verdiepte velden, pseudo-kapitelen, decoratieve consoles, rustica-velden en een schijn-balkon met balusters. De risaliet wordt beëindigd door een dakkapel met een frontonvormige bekroning die gedragen wordt door gepleisterde hoeklisenen. De dakkapel heeft twee rondboogvormige vensters voorzien van sierbanden en -blokken. Op de nok van de dakkapel is een smeedijzeren bekroning met windvaan geplaatst. De paneeldeur heeft twee staande vensters achter sierroosters en bevindt zich onder een bovenlicht waarin, in gouden letters, de naam Groote Sociëteit geschilderd is. Rechts van de entree twee schuifvensters onder strekken met een decoratieve natuurstenen sluitsteen met diamantkop. Links van de entree een grote pui onder een als kroonlijst uitgevoerde puibalk. Het grote tweedelige venster heeft een houten onderbouw met panelen en wordt aan de bovenzijde afgesloten door een gekoppeld meerruits bovenlicht met gefacetteerde ruitjes.
De vier T-vensters op de verdieping die het omlijstte, centraal geplaatste venster flankeren, zijn voorzien van een baard van kunststeen en worden aan de bovenzijde afgesloten door een strek met een decoratieve natuurstenen sluitsteen met diamantkop. Aan weerszijden van de dakkapel een oeil-de-boeuf.
Aan de straatzijde heeft het pand een hardstenen stoep, begrensd door een smeedijzeren hekwerk.
INTERIEUR. De indeling van het interieur is in hoofdlijnen gehandhaafd. Vermeldenswaardig is onder meer de gang waarvan het tochtportaal voorzien is van een marmeren lambrisering en een tochtdeur met geëtst glas. De gang heeft een tegellambrisering, een met marmer uitgelegde vloer en een stucplafond. De paneeldeuren zijn omgeven door een houten omlijsting. De bordestrap met ijzeren balusters heeft een gietijzeren, met Neo-Renaissance motieven gedecoreerde trappaal. Op de verdieping bevindt zich een woning met in de gang een deur met boven- en zijlichten, alle gevuld met kleurig glas-in-lood, die leidt naar een aan de voorzijde van het pand gelegen vertrek.

Introduction
RESIDENTIAL HOUSE from 1893, which since 1911 has been largely in use as a clubhouse for "De Groote Sociëteit", was built to the design of the architect Johannes de Bie in Eclectic style. He also made the drawings for the 1911 renovation whereby the shop front to the left of the entrance came about.
The building is situated in the protected townscape and is located on the Lingehaven. It forms part of the western, closed facade wall.
N.B. The rear facade has some modern additions, which are of subordinate importance for the preservation.
Description
Two-storey building erected on a roughly rectangular floor plan in red brick (running bond with struck joint) with a natural stone, decoratively chiselled plinth and drip moulding. The truncated hipped roof is covered with rubber tiles and has a gutter executed as a cornice supported on consoles with leaf motif.
Front facade (east) with a prominently rising central risalit in which the entrance is placed. The door and the T-shaped window above it are set in a plastered frame, designed as a principal moulding with recessed fields, pseudo-capitals, decorative consoles, rusticated fields and a false balcony with balusters. The risalit is terminated by a dormer with a pediment-shaped crown supported by plastered corner lisenes. The dormer has two round-arch shaped windows provided with decorative bands and blocks. On the ridge of the dormer is placed a wrought-iron crown with weathervane. The panel door has two vertical windows behind ornamental grilles and is situated under a fanlight in which, in golden letters, the name Groote Sociëteit is painted. To the right of the entrance two sash windows under cornices with a decorative natural stone keystone with diamond head. To the left of the entrance a large shop front under a shopfront beam executed as a cornice. The large two-part window has a wooden substructure with panels and is closed at the top by a coupled multi-paned fanlight with faceted panes.
The four T-shaped windows on the upper storey that flank the framed, centrally placed window are provided with a beard of artificial stone and are closed at the top by a cornice with a decorative natural stone keystone with diamond head. On either side of the dormer an oeil-de-boeuf.
On the street side the building has a hardstone step, bordered by a wrought-iron railing.
INTERIOR. The layout of the interior has been maintained in its main lines. Noteworthy is, among other things, the hall of which the draught vestibule is provided with marble wainscoting and a draught door with etched glass. The hall has tile wainscoting, a floor laid with marble and a stucco ceiling. The panel doors are surrounded by a wooden frame. The staircase with iron balusters has a cast-iron newel decorated with Neo-Renaissance motifs. On the upper storey there is a residence with in the hall a door with top and side lights, all filled with coloured leaded glass, which leads to a room located at the front of the building.
