Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The Flemish BARN belonging to the farmstead complex Blaaksedijk 252 in Binnenmaas was built in 1938 for the De Jongh family and is an example of Interbellum architecture. The barn, built to a design by architect De Vecht, has a structure consisting of timber-framed knee braces made of wooden parts, which are fastened to each other with iron bolts.
The barn has been modified only to a limited extent. In the northwest corner of the barn, an additional garage has been added. However, the doors are executed entirely in line with the other garage doors. The wooden owl boards have been replaced by plastic corrugated sheets. Several boxes for the storage of fruit or potatoes have been installed in the barn, whereby the rear facade and parts of the right side facade have also been sealed up.
Description
The barn has a rectangular ground plan, with one storey and a high-rising composite curved gabled roof with owl boards. The barn is particularly wide, which is made possible by the use of timber-framed knee braces without intermediate support. Two garages have been built at the front of the barn. Access to the side section is located entirely on the left in the front facade. On the right long side of the barn, the cattle shed has been built. This cattle shed, like the stable at the rear, has been partly replaced by cooling boxes. In the northwest corner, the barn is connected to the residential house by means of an intermediate section.
The facades are constructed in red brick in half-brick bond. Concrete lintels are placed above doors and windows. Sliding doors and double hinged doors are clamped, the fixed windows are provided with cross windows or six-pane windows. The other fixed windows in the facades contain cast-iron, six- or eight-pane windows. The asymmetrical front facade (north side) is provided from left to right with a large sliding door, a narrow window with cast-iron frame and twice double hinged garage doors. In the middle layer of the facade are three windows. Above these there are again three windows, just below the gutter. On the wall surface between these rows of windows, the year 1938 is displayed in wrought-iron anchors.
The asymmetrical rear facade has windows only in the lowest layer and just below the gutter. In the lowest layer, the windows are sealed up or replaced by shutters that are connected to the cooling installation.
The asymmetrical left side facade is entirely on the left provided with a wagon door that opens in two directions. The facade further contains eight narrow, eight-pane windows.
On the asymmetrical right side facade, a small barn with half-hipped roof has been built on the far right. The facade was originally provided with a row of fixed stable windows. These have been partly sealed up, partly replaced by smaller shutters that are connected to the cooling installation.
Valuation
The barn is of general interest on account of its cultural-historical and architectural-historical value as part of a distinctive, characteristic link in the development of rural architecture and as a good example of Interbellum architecture in agricultural building. The barn has ensemble value on account of the spatial-functional and visual relationship with the residential house and on account of its location in relation to the Blaaksedijk. The barn is also of importance on account of its recognizability and the large degree of integrity.
