The register's description

Omschrijving onderdeel 1: 50 KV-STATION

Inleiding

Waardering

Het 50 KV-STATION is van algemeen belang:

- vanwege de zorgvuldig gedetailleerde en uitgevoerde architectuur;

- vanwege het bijzondere en zorgvuldig ontworpen interieur;

- als goed voorbeeld van een onderstation naar ontwerp van de architect Fels in een functioneel zakelijke stijl;

- vanwege de aanwezigheid en compleetheid van de installaties in het interieur;

- vanwege de functionele samenhang met de naastgelegen elektriciteitsmasten;

- vanwege de cultuurhistorische relatie met het complex van Radio Kootwijk, waarbij de aanwezigheid van Radio Kootwijk de ligging van het 50 kv-station heeft bepaald;

- als voorbeeld van de geschiedenis van de elektriciteitsvoorziening in Nederland;

Description component 1: 50 KV-STATION

Introduction

50 kv-station from the period 1923-1931 designed by architect Hendrik Fels (1882-1962), house architect of the Provinciale Gelderse Electriciteits Maatschappij (PGEM) in the style of Nieuwe Zakelijkheid.

Description

The 50 kv-station is composed of various building components that differ in height and are offset in relation to each other. The entire building has three storeys, including a basement, under a composite flat roof with overhang. The building was originally constructed in different colours of brick and was plastered at a later stage. This plaster layer is a detriment to the monumental value. The facades are provided with cornice bands, pilasters, small square spandrels and a single spherical finial. The building has multiple entrances, including the main entrance with a portico and two side entrances with a small canopy. The rear entrance is provided with a staircase, landing, side walls, pillars and flat roof. The windows are of different sizes and types, including window strips, a few stained glass windows. All windows are provided with a (continuous) cill.

The interior has largely been preserved intact and consists among other things of the original ground plan and various components, including most internal doors, some of which with original hinges and fasteners, original metal window frames, its own air and heating system (grilles, heaters etc.), its own electricity network with wall switches and various tiled floors where the colour of the tiles indicates the location of the installations. In the basement a transformer room with concrete finish, an even distribution of installations and lamps, and a heating room with the air circulation system. On the ground floor a hall with black and white tiled floor and cladding of concrete-enamel, toilet with wall tiles, transformer room with cladding of fair-faced brickwork finished with black trim, installations (double in case of failure), lamps, cables running from the basement to the intermediate floor via narrow openings along the wall, corridor with grey wall tiles, hoist room/inspection room with remains of the railway line and walls with fair-faced brickwork), low voltage room (with floor tiles, grey wall tiles and fuse boxes, compressor room with installations and stairwell. On the first floor an operating room (with black and white tiled floor, walls finished with fair-faced brickwork with black trim and switchstation installations), a second operating room (with switching installations) and an internal wall with small panes.

Valuation

The 50 KV-STATION is of general importance:

- because of the carefully detailed and executed architecture;

- because of the special and carefully designed interior;

- as a good example of a substation designed by architect Fels in a functional commercial style;

- because of the presence and completeness of the installations in the interior;

- because of the functional relationship with the adjacent electricity pylons;

- because of the cultural-historical relationship with the Radio Kootwijk complex, where the presence of Radio Kootwijk determined the location of the 50 kv-station;

- as an example of the history of electricity supply in the Netherlands;

- as a representative example of the development of the technology from 10kv to 50kv which made substations necessary.
