Inleiding

Houten geprofileerde windveren gaan zonder onderbreking over in identiek geprofileerde gootlijsten.

Introduction

Small PARISH CHURCH of the hall church type with attached RECTORY and SACRISTY, built in 1900 at the behest of the Diocese of Rotterdam for the Roman Catholic parish in Melissant. Architect A. Bruning from Amsterdam designed the building in a sober, rural style with Neo-Gothic influences. Initially, the bequest of Jonkheer H.J. Diert van Melissant from The Hague was intended for the establishment of a church with tower, a sacristy, a rectory and a school building. However, the Diocese decided, given the low number of communicants in Melissant, to settle for the hall church with a sacristy and two rooms, intended for the temporary residence of the parish priest, combined in one building.

Originally, the premises contained no kitchen; meals were prepared by the family who inhabited the farmhouse to the west of the building. This practice persisted for a long time. Recently, a kitchen has been added to the premises.

The building is situated on a small rectangular plot, which is accessible via a circa 50 metre gravel path from the Provincial road. The building occupies almost the entire plot, which is otherwise covered with grass. Chestnut trees grow along the drive and in front of the front facade.

Description

L-shaped building housing a hall church, a sacristy and two rooms. The stem of the L-shape is formed by the rectangular ground plan of the hall church, with a gabled roof parallel to the Provincial road. Small cast-iron roof cresting are placed on the roof. To the east of the church space is an equally gabled roof-covered rectangular volume containing the entrance vestibule of the church. To the west of the church space is a small rectangular toilet room under a flat roof. The almost square ground plan of the foot of the L-shape provides space for a south-north oriented central corridor, with two rooms to the east, and to the west of the corridor, above the cellar, are the sacristy and a small kitchen. This layout is also expressed in the front facade with two stepped gables, of which the eastern one is stepped. Like the hall church, this building volume has one storey. Here, however, a hipped roof is applied, with two stepped gables at the front, belonging to the two stepped gables. The roofs are covered with pantiles. In the roof planes of the residential section are small roof dormers with catslide roofs, moulded bands and cross windows in the rectangular windows. Wooden moulded bargeboards continue without interruption into identically moulded gutter cornices.

The facades are built in red brickwork in Flemish bond. At the level of the window sill is a continuous sandstone drip moulding. The facade is provided at the top with three projecting brick layers. The windows in the residential section are provided with cross-shaped sash windows with rectangular fanlights. These windows are set under a segmental arch with brick ornamental work in the arch soffit. The windows in the facades of the hall church are mainly single or paired round-arch windows with leaded glass, which are placed in a arched relieving arch.

The asymmetrical front (south side) is composed of two stepped gables, separated from each other by a one metre wide cornice-topped facade. The right stepped gable steps out slightly. Below the cornice-topped facade is the renewed entrance to the rectory. In the middle of both stepped gables is a window. In the tops of the gables is a narrower rectangular sash window.

The asymmetrical rear facade, the long side of the hall church, has four bays, of which the right one is entirely blind. In the two left bays are paired round-arch windows, in the remaining bay is a single round arch. In the recessed facade of the toilet room are two small rectangular windows. In the equally recessed facade of the entrance vestibule of the hall church is a narrow and elongated round-arch window.

The asymmetrical left side is composed of the cornice-topped facade belonging to the rectory and the stepped gable of the hall church. In relation to this, the rectangular facade of the toilet room steps out. In this facade is a round-arch-shaped relieving arch. In the facade of the rectory are a window and a back door. In the entirely windowless stepped gable of the hall church are two arched relieving arches.

The asymmetrical right side facade is composed of the recessed facade part of the rectory and the stepped gables of the hall church and the entrance vestibule. In the facade of the rectory are two windows. In the facade of the entrance vestibule is a round-arch-shaped door with wrought-iron decorative hinges. In the top is a pointed-arch-shaped relieving arch, above a horizontal band of decorative brickwork.

The well-preserved interior of the hall church is provided with a tiled church floor, wooden wall panelling and an inbuilt wooden confessional. The wooden barrel vault is supported by a moulded round arch and wooden carved braces. The original altar has been removed from the church. The wooden pews and the altar railing are authentic. In the church stands a single-manual secretaire organ, made by H. Knipscheer in 1843, purchased from a private individual in 1920 and placed in Melissant. The interior of the residential house is characterised by richly moulded wooden doors and cornices. In the sacristy is a cabinet, which is worked in an identical manner.
