Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
WATER TOWER built in 1939-1941 to a design by J. Gerber in a style related to the Delft School. From the middle of the 1920s onwards, as a reaction particularly to Functionalism, this traditionalist building style emerges, which maintains its influence after the war. Although this building style is widely distributed, the number of examples in water tower construction is relatively limited. The water tower in Dirksland is the earliest example of this.
The middle section of the island of Goeree-Overflakkee was connected to the water supply network with the construction of this tower in Dirksland, located centrally on the island, just before the war. The water tower is situated at a considerable distance from the built-up centres of the villages of Dirksland and Sommelsdijk, near the intersection of Staakweg/Staverseweg and Korteweegje. The flat landscape and the largely absent surrounding development mean that the building is visible from the wide surrounding area. The silhouette of the tower is attuned to this.
Description
A round water tower constructed in brickwork (Flemish bond) with a height of 62.5 metres, topped by a projecting, conical roof originally clad with copper and now with bitumen, bearing a lantern and a slender, copper-clad needle spire with a ball finial. A distinctive form has been achieved by giving the tower shaft an entasis, through which it refers to a Greek column.
The tower has a rounded arch entrance with a double door. The interior of the tower is lit by small windows with steel frames with roller blinds with offsets which are distributed evenly across the tower. On the ground floor there are low-set rectangular windows all around; in the tower shaft there are very narrow windows placed one above the other; at the level of the reservoir are larger windows. Just below the projecting concrete roof edge there is another series of rectangular windows all around, which close off the shaft.
Internally, the tower has a concrete load-bearing structure consisting of eight concrete pillars against the wall and four rectangular columns standing freely in the tower shaft. On this rests the concrete flat-bottomed reservoir with a capacity of 575 m3. The original fixtures are still present. Via an open, generously proportioned grand staircase, the reservoir and the roof structure are accessible. The shaft, which has a diameter of almost ten metres, is generously proportioned through the absence of intermediate levels.
Valuation
The water tower is of general importance because of its cultural-historical, architectural-historical and situational value.
- The water tower is of cultural-historical value because of its significance for the history of water supply on the island of Goeree-Overflakkee and as a distinctive example of a building type.
- The water tower is of architectural-historical value because of its carefully designed exterior in the style of the Delft School, as an important work in the oeuvre of architect J. Gerber, as a distinctive precursor of Delft School architecture in water tower construction and as one of the highest water towers in the Netherlands.
- The water tower is also important because of the recognisability and the high degree of integrity.
- The water tower has situational value because of the distinctive spatial-functional and visual position that the tower occupies in the flat polder landscape of Goeree-Overflakkee, by which it is also important as a distinctive "landmark".
