Inleiding

Description
Introduction
CLOISTER with CHAPEL in neo-gothic style from 1889 with extension in the same style from 1925 to the design of the Amersfoort architectural firm H. Kroes and Sons. The convent house was built on commission of the Onze Lieve Vrouwe Foundation in Amersfoort as an extension of an existing cloister that was housed in the adjacent eighteenth-century former residence (national monument number 7370). The rear facade of this former residence was raised by one storey during the renovation in 1925 and the floors were fitted with new windows.
The convent house is part of the closed facade wall along the north side of the Oudegracht in the centre of Alkmaar.
Description
The cloister building has an almost rectangular plan and consists largely of two storeys under a truncated gabled roof with slate of which the ridge line is parallel to the street. The chapel forms part of the building body of the cloister but is taller and is covered by a gabled roof with slate covering, of which the ridge line is perpendicular to the Oudegracht. The front facade along the Oudegracht is built in red brick in running bond with a natural stone plinth, speckled courses and continuous drip moulds. Below the eaves line a brick frieze with herringbone arch motif and on the corners pilasters. The six-pane sash windows and doors are located in pointed arch-shaped spandrels. The arch fields above the windows and the panels below the windows are filled with brick mosaics in various patterns.
On the right of the centre of the front facade is located the tall pointed gable of the chapel, which divides the facade in two as it were. Below the chapel located on the upper floor was the refectory. The pointed gable has two corner pilasters with pinnacles and in the gable top a pointed arch-shaped frieze with a natural stone keystone serving as console for the top pilaster with natural stone cross-flower as crowning. On the ground floor two six-pane windows and above a large composite pointed arch-shaped chapel window with tracery and leaded glass windows. On either side of the chapel window narrow spandrels with three-lobed termination and above a round spandrel.
The left facade section has four window bays with in the rightmost one on the ground floor a pointed arch-shaped porch with three stone steps leading to a broad double door with neo-gothic decoration under a fanlight. Above the porch, which is closed off by an iron gate in neo-gothic style, a date stone with the date 1889, surrounded by strapwork in neo-renaissance style. In the roof section above this facade section one roof dormer under a small gabled roof with window and wooden weathervane in the form of a pointed arch.
The right facade section, which was added in 1925, has three window bays with in the left one an entrance arrangement with a varnished door in neo-gothic style under a fanlight. In the remaining window bays identical windows as in the left facade section. Below the two ground floor windows an arched basement window.
In the rear facade the tripartition of the building can also be discerned. On the far left the flat-roofed extension from 1925 of three storeys and to the right of that the five-sided choir termination of the chapel with two large and one small pointed arch window with figurative coloured leaded glass (1947). To the right of the chapel on the ground floor a single-storey outbuilding (originally a conservatory) with openable doors towards the garden and on the upper floor five windows.
Valuation
The cloister with chapel from 1889/1925 is of general importance because of its architectural and cultural-historical value as a representative example of an urban cloister building in neo-gothic style, characteristic of the oeuvre of the architect H. Kroes and Sons. The premises also have situational value because of its image-defining location in the facade wall of the Oudegracht in the city centre of Alkmaar.
