Inleiding
WARENHUIS in Late Amsterdamse Schoolstijl uit 1925 met art-decodetaillering, gebouwd in opdracht van Vroom & Dreesmann naar ontwerp van G.W.J. Caron uit Amsterdam. Oorspronkelijk was de gevel langs de Laat symmetrisch van opzet maar het gebouw is aan deze zijde in 1933 en 1969 uitgebreid. Het warenhuis is gesitueerd op de hoek van de Laat en de Ridderstraat.
Omschrijving
Groot winkelpand van drie bouwlagen onder een plat dak met mastiekdekking, boven de winkelpui opgetrokken in gele baksteen. Het pand heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond met afgesnoten hoek op de hoek van De Laat en de Ridderstraat. De rechthoekige vensters op beide verdiepingen hebben stalen taatsramen met een kleine roedenverdeling en zijn deels voorzien van gekleurd glas-in-lood. De gevels langs de Laat (noordoost) en langs de Ridderstraat (noordwest) tellen op de eerste verdieping elk acht vensterassen met onregelmatig geplaatste, per twee en drie gekoppelde vijftienruits ramen met negenruits bovenlichten. Alle vensters van de eerste verdieping rusten op een doorlopende waterlijst van natuursteen met ter hoogte van de muurdammen telkens drie ringvormige ornamenten. De strekken boven de vensters zijn uitgevoerd met decoratief metselwerk en op de hoeken voorzien van smalle natuurstenen blokken met een zaagtandprofiel. In beide gevels op de tweede verdieping drie samengestelde vensterstroken met vierkante stalen achtruitsvensters tussen afgeschuinde gemetselde stijlen. De middelste vensterstroken tellen elk acht ramen en bevinden zich in licht risalerende gevelpartijen waarop in vergulde letters de naam "Vroom en Dreesmann" is aangebracht. De hoekpartijen van dit geveldeel zijn iets boven de daklijst opgemetseld. In de gevel aan de Ridderstraat tellen de buitenste vensterstroken zes ramen en langs de Laat rechts een vensterstrook van drie en links één van elf ramen. De vensterstroken zijn aan de boven- en onderzijde ter hoogte van de dagkanten voorzien van uitkragende verticale gemetselde sierelementen. De afgesnoten hoek bevat op de eerste verdieping een loggia met gestapelde natuurstenen kolommen die het balkon van de tweede verdieping ondersteunen. Een stalen deur met roedenverdeling opent op de loggia, die aan de bovenzijde is dichtgezet met stalen roedenverdeelde bovenlichten. Van het oorspronkelijke interieur uit de bouwtijd zijn onder meer bewaard gebleven: het betonskelet met vierkante kolommen, het trappenhuis met centrale lift in glazen schacht met betegelde vloer, de gekleurde glas-in-loodramen in art-decostijl in de voormalige directeurskamer, het in zwart en wit marmer uitgevoerde trappenhuis van de oorspronkelijke entree naar het restaurant op de eerste verdieping, de voormalige dienstingang met betegelde entree, gang en houten trap.
Waardering
Het warenhuis van Vroom en Dreesmann uit 1925 is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur-, cultuurhistorische en typologische waarde als representatief en karakteristiek voorbeeld van een warenhuis uit het interbellum in Late Amsterdamse Schoolstijl met art-decodetaillering, naar ontwerp van de winkelarchitect Caron uit Amsterdam. Het pand heeft situationele waarde vanwege de beeldbepalende ligging in de binnenstad van Alkmaar.

DEPARTMENT STORE in Late Amsterdam School style from 1925 with art deco detailing, built on commission for Vroom & Dreesmann to the design of G.W.J. Caron from Amsterdam. Description
Large shop premises of three storeys under a flat roof with mastic covering, above the shop front built up in yellow brick. The premises have a rectangular plan with cut-off corner at the corner of De Laat and the Ridderstraat. The rectangular windows on both upper storeys have steel sash windows with small glazing bars and are partly fitted with coloured leaded glass. The facades along the Laat (north-east) and along the Ridderstraat (north-west) have on the first floor each eight window bays with irregularly placed, coupled in twos and threes, fifteen-pane windows with nine-pane fanlights. All windows of the first floor rest on a continuous drip moulding of natural stone with at the level of the wall piers each time three ring-shaped ornaments. The stretches above the windows are executed with decorative brickwork and at the corners fitted with narrow natural stone blocks with a sawtooth profile. In both facades on the second floor three composite window strips with square steel sash windows between bevelled brick mullions.
