Inleiding
BANKGEBOUW uit 1921-1923 in een traditionalistische, op Duitse voorbeelden geïnspireerde bouwstijl naar ontwerp van de Gebroeders Van Gendt die gespecialiseerd waren in bankgebouwen, en met medewerking van de Alkmaarse architect P.N. Leguit. Het pand werd gebouwd in opdracht van de Nederlandse Bank en bevatte ook twee bovenwoningen voor de directeur en de conciërge.
Het monumentale pand is zeer beeldbepalend gesitueerd op de hoek van de Heul en de Koorstraat.
Omschrijving
Bankgebouw van twee bouwlagen op een U-vormige plattegrond onder drie haaks op elkaar aansluitende zadeldaken rond een plat afgedekte binnenhof. De zadeldaken met steekkappen zijn gedekt met leien. Op de noordwesthoek van het gebouw een ronde traptoren onder een met leien gedekt kegeldak. De gevels aan de straatzijde zijn voorzien van brede risalieten met geschulpte topgevels. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in overwegend rode baksteen in kruisverband boven een hoge sokkel van blokken natuursteen met plint en geprofileerde waterlijst onder de begane grondvensters. De brede strakke omlijstingen van vensters en deuren, de deklijsten van de topgevels en de gootlijst op klossen zijn eveneens in natuursteen uitgevoerd. De vensters op de begane grond zijn grotendeels samengesteld en voorzien van ijzeren tralies met rozetmotief. Op de verdieping schuifvensters met roedenverdeling, deels samengesteld binnen een brede natuurstenen omlijsting.
De gevel aan de Koorstraat (ZO) bevat een risaliet met geschulpte geveltop waarin beganegronds twee drieledige vensterpartijen aan weerszijden van een natuurstenen cartouche met het jaartal 1922. Op de verdieping vijf smalle schuifvensters met roedenverdeling en in de geveltop een uit vijf ramen samengestelde vensterstrook en daarboven een natuurstenen vierpasvenster met tracering. Rechts van de risaliet beganegronds een venster met tralies en op de verdieping een schuifvenster. De gevel aan de Heul (NO) is breder dan die aan de Koorstraat en bevat iets rechts uit het midden de brede risaliet met geschulpte geveltop. Links van de risaliet op de begane grond een samengesteld kozijn met twee vensters aan weerszijden van een natuurstenen reliëf met het wapen van Alkmaar, gedragen door twee staande leeuwen. Op de verdieping een uit drie schuifvensters samengesteld kozijn. In de risaliet op de begane grond drie samengestelde kozijnen met getraliede vensters in één lijst en op de verdieping drie gekoppelde vensters. In de geveltop een vensterstrook van vijf ramen en bovenin een natuurstenen vierpasraam met tracering. Rechts van de risaliet bevindt zich de entreepartij onder een zadeldakje met een kleine in- en uitzwenkende topgevel. De brede geverniste schuifdeur en het driedelige bovenlicht hebben een natuurstenen omlijsting, evenals het portiek. Boven de deur bevindt zich een natuurstenen cartouche met het opschrift: "Agentschap van de Nederlandsche Bank". Aan weerszijden van het entreeportiek bevindt zich een klein getralied venster. De ronde hoektoren is voorzien van enkele kleine vensters en het kegeldak is bekroond door een windwijzer in de vorm van een scheepje. De rechter zijgevel (NW) is minder gedecoreerd omdat deze aan een binnenterrein grenst. Links bevindt zich de hoektoren en rechts daarvan loopt de sokkel door over de hele breedte van de gevel. Op de begane grond drie deuren en rechts van de toren drie smalle hoge vensters. Het bredere rechter geveldeel bevat op de eerste verdieping acht en op de tweede verdieping vijf vensters. Uiterst rechts een boven de daklijst opgaande in- en uitzwenkende geveltop met zoldervenster en hijsbalk. De achtergevel (ZW) bestaat uit twee puntgevels en daartussen een recht gesloten lager geveldeel met enkele asymmetrisch geplaatste vensters.
Waardering
Het bankgebouw uit 1921-1923 is van algemeen belang vanwege de cultuur- en architectuurhistorische waarde als representatief voorbeeld van een bankgebouw in een, op Duitse voorbeelden geïnspireerde, robuuste traditionalistische bouwstijl kenmerkend voor het latere oeuvre van de gebroeders Van Gendt, gespecialiseerd in bankgebouwen. Description
Bank building of two storeys on a U-shaped ground plan beneath three gabled roofs at right angles to each other around a flat-covered inner courtyard. The gabled roofs with steep gables are covered with slate. On the north-west corner of the building a round staircase tower beneath a conical roof covered with slate. The street-facing facades are provided with broad pilasters with moulded top gables. The facades are constructed in predominantly red brick in English bond above a high plinth of dressed stone blocks with plinth moulding and moulded drip moulding beneath the ground floor windows. The broad taut surrounds of windows and doors, the mouldings of the top gables and the gutter ledge on corbels are likewise executed in dressed stone. The ground floor windows are largely composite and provided with iron bars with rosette motif. On the first floor sash windows with glazing bars, partly composite within a broad dressed stone surround.
The facade on the Koorstraat (SE) contains a pilaster with moulded top gable in which on the ground floor two three-part window groups on either side of a dressed stone cartouche with the date 1922. On the first floor five narrow sash windows with glazing bars and in the top gable a window strip composed of five panes and above it a dressed stone quatrefoil window with tracery. To the right of the pilaster on the ground floor a barred window and on the first floor a sash window. The facade on the Heul (NE) is broader than that on the Koorstraat and contains slightly right of centre the broad pilaster with moulded top gable. Left of the pilaster on the ground floor a composite frame with two windows on either side of a dressed stone relief with the coat of arms of Alkmaar, borne by two standing lions. On the first floor a frame composed of three sash windows. In the pilaster on the ground floor three composite frames with barred windows in one list and on the first floor three coupled windows. In the top gable a window strip of five panes and above a dressed stone quatrefoil window with tracery. To the right of the pilaster is located the entrance feature beneath a small gabled roof with a small inward and outward swinging top gable. The broad glazed sliding door and the three-part fanlight have a dressed stone surround, as does the portico. Above the door is situated a dressed stone cartouche with the inscription: "Agency of the Dutch Bank". On either side of the entrance portico is a small barred window. The round corner tower is provided with a few small windows and the conical roof is crowned by a weather vane in the form of a little ship. The right side facade (NW) is less decorated because it borders on a courtyard. On the left is the corner tower and to the right of it the plinth runs across the entire width of the facade. On the ground floor three doors and to the right of the tower three narrow high windows. The broader right facade section contains on the first floor eight and on the second floor five windows. At the far right above the roofline an inward and outward swinging top gable with garret window and hoist beam. The rear facade (SW) consists of two pointed gables and between them a straight closed lower facade section with a few asymmetrically placed windows.
