Inleiding
WINKELWOONHUIS met bijbehorend PAKHUIS van Albert Heijn in neorenaissancestijl uit 1897. De eerste winkel van Albert Heijn werd in 1887 in de Zaanstreek geopend, die in Alkmaar behoort tot één van de oudste winkelpanden die het bedrijf nadien in gebruik heeft genomen. Het woonwinkelpand ligt zeer beeldbepalend op de hoek van de Fnidsen en de Hekelstraat in het oude centrum van Alkmaar.
Omschrijving
Samengesteld hoekpand van twee bouwlagen, bestaande uit een winkel met bovenwoning en een pakhuis. Het samengestelde pand wordt afgedekt door een mansardedak met rode oudhollandse dakpannen, waarvan de noklijn evenwijdig aan de Hekelstraat ligt. Op de begane grond van het winkelwoonhuis in de voor- en zijgevel een winkelpui met natuurstenen omlijsting in neorenaissancestijl. De winkelpui bevat een fries met zwarte glasplaat waarop in goudkleurige letters de teksten "ALBERT HEIJN" en "KRUIDENIERS-GRUTTERSWAREN" zijn aangebracht. Boven de winkelpui zijn de gevels opgetrokken in rode baksteen met ter hoogte van de vensterdorpels gepleisterde speklagen. Het woonwinkelpand bevat op de verdieping schuifvensters met gekleurde glas-in-lood bovenlichten in Art Deco-trant. Een fries tussen twee dubbele geprofileerde cordonlijsten vormt de scheiding tussen de winkelpui en de verdiepingslaag. Onder de verdiepingvensters is het fries voorzien van tegeltableaus met Delftsblauwe tegeltjes, afgewisseld door natuurstenen reliëfs met rolwerk.
De symmetrisch opgebouwde voorgevel (NO) aan het Fnidsen bevat op de begane grond een winkeldeur onder bovenlicht tussen twee grote etalagevensters, voorzien van bovenlichten en rustend op een hardstenen plint. Aan weerszijden van de etalagevensters bevinden zich natuurstenen pilasters, die zijn opgebouwd uit een basement met verdiept veld, een schacht met cannelures en bovenin een wortelvormig ornament. De pilaster wordt afgesloten door een fantasiekapiteel met vijf knoppen. De verdieping aan het Fnidsen telt drie schuifvensters onder segmentbogen met natuurstenen blokken. In de spaarvelden van de buitenste vensters siermetselmozaïek en in de middelste een natuurstenen reliëf met kop. Ter hoogte van de boogvelden zijn in de voorgevel vier decoratieve muurankers aangebracht. De verdieping wordt afgesloten door een hoofdgestel dat de topgevel draagt. Deze bestaat uit een trapgevel met geprofileerde dekplaten en daarboven een kleine halsgevel, voorzien van klauwstukken en bekroond door een segmentboogvormig fronton. In het spaarveld onder de geblokte segmentboog van het zoldervenster een reliëf met kop. De sluitsteen van de boog dient als console onder de uitgemetselde toppilaster met sierbekroning. Aan de toppilaster is een hijsbalk van siersmeedwerk bevestigd. De zijgevel van het winkelwoonhuis (ZO) aan de Hekelstraat wordt in tweeën gedeeld door een fraai bewerkte vierkante zinken hemelwaterafvoer met een zaagtanddecoratie. Rechts daarvan is de winkelpui van de voorgevel om de hoek doorgezet met twee grote etalageruiten onder bovenlichten, geflankeerd door identieke pilasters en rustend op dezelfde hardstenen plint. Op de verdieping rechts twee dezelfde vensters als in de voorgevel met siermetselmozaïek in de boogvelden. Ook hier treft men de rijk versierde neorenaissance muurankers aan. Dit geveldeel wordt beëindigd door een smalle gootlijst op klosjes. Het geveldeel links van de hemelwaterafvoer wordt bekroond door een trapgevel. Op de begane grond een winkelruit met twee bovenlichten en een glasdeur, geflankeerd door in natuursteen uitgevoerde blokpilasters. Op de verdieping een gekoppeld venster onder een brede segmentboog met bakstenen tracering en siermetselmozaïek in het boogveld. De verdieping wordt hier afgesloten door een uitkragende natuurstenen profiellijst die aan de uiteinden rust op consoles met gebeeldhouwde koppen. De trapgevel bestaat uit vier trappen met geprofileerde dekplaten en bevat een zoldervenster, omgeven door een grote gemetselde driepasboog. Bovenin de trapgevel een toppilaster met een kleine sierbol als bekroning.
De tuitgevel van het pakhuis (ZO)aan de Hekelstraat is symmetrisch van opzet en gemetseld uit overwegend rode baksteen met gepleisterde speklagen. In de middenrisaliet op de begane grond twee enkele deuren onder vijfruits bovenlicht en op de verdieping een venster met bovenlicht. Aan weerszijden van de middenpartij links op de begane grond en op de verdieping rondboogvensters en rechts op de begane grond een T-venster.
Waardering
Het woonwinkelpand met bijbehorend pakhuis uit 1897 is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde als gaaf bewaard gebleven en herkenbare Albert Heijn-winkel in rijk gedecoreerde neorenaissancestijl uit het einde van de 19de eeuw. Description
A composite corner building of two storeys, consisting of a shop with residential above and a warehouse. The composite building is covered by a mansard roof with red old Dutch tiles, with the ridge line parallel to Hekelstraat. On the ground floor of the shop-dwelling, the front and side elevations have a shop front with ashlar moulding in neo-renaissance style. The shop front contains a frieze with black plate glass on which the texts "ALBERT HEIJN" and "KRUIDENIERS-GRUTTERSWAREN" are applied in gold-coloured letters. Above the shop front, the elevations are built in red brick with rendered plaster bands at the height of the window sills. The shop-dwelling has sash windows on the upper storey with coloured leaded glass fanlights in Art Deco style. In the spandrel below the ashlar segmental arch of the attic window a relief with a head. The keystone of the arch serves as a console under the projecting moulded top pilaster with decorative crest. A lifting beam of ornamental ironwork is attached to the top pilaster. The side elevation of the shop-dwelling (SE) facing Hekelstraat is divided in two by a finely worked square zinc rainwater downpipe with a sawtooth decoration. To the right of this, the shop front of the front elevation is continued around the corner with two large display panes under fanlights, flanked by identical pilasters and resting on the same hard stone plinth. On the upper storey to the right two windows the same as in the front elevation with decorative brick mosaic in the arch fields. Here too are the richly decorated neo-renaissance wall anchors. This elevation section is finished with a narrow gutter line on corbels. The elevation section to the left of the rainwater downpipe is crowned by a stepped gable. On the ground floor a shop window with two fanlights and a glass door, flanked by pilasters executed in natural stone blocks. On the upper storey a coupled window under a wide segmental arch with brick tracery and decorative brick mosaic in the arch field. The upper storey is finished here by a projecting ashlar moulded line that rests at the ends on consoles with carved heads. The stepped gable consists of four steps with moulded coping stones and contains an attic window, surrounded by a large brick three-lobe arch. At the top of the stepped gable a top pilaster with a small decorative ball as crest.
The spout gable of the warehouse (SE) facing Hekelstraat is symmetrical in layout and built in predominantly red brick with rendered plaster bands. In the centre projection on the ground floor two single doors under five-pane fanlight and on the upper storey a window with fanlight. On either side of the middle section on the ground floor and on the upper storey round-arch windows and on the right on the ground floor a T-window.
Valuation
The shop-dwelling with adjoining warehouse from 1897 is of general importance because of its architectural and cultural-historical value as a well-preserved and recognisable Albert Heijn shop in richly decorated neo-renaissance style from the end of the 19th century.
