Inleiding
GEDENKTEKEN, de "Burgemeester Wendelaar Lantaarn", is in 1932 opgericht naar ontwerp van A.J. Kropholler ter gelegenheid van het 12½-jarig ambtsjubileum van burgemeester W. C. Wendelaar en aangeboden door de Alkmaarse bevolking. Het gedenkteken was oorspronkelijk gesitueerd op het Canadaplein in de nabijheid van de St. Laurenskerk en de door Kropholler ontworpen gebouwen aan het Kerkplein en de St. Laurensstraat. In 2000 is het gedenkteken verplaatst van het Canadaplein naar de Koorstraat.
Omschrijving
Het gedenkteken bestaat uit een 7 meter hoge in kloostermoppen gemetselde taps toelopende vierkante kolom met aan de basis een zitbank en als bekroning een koperen lantaarn. Boven het betonnen basement bestaat de bank uit blokken graniet en daarboven bevindt zich een granieten band met de inscriptie: "Door de burgerij aan burgemeester W.C. Wendelaar. 1 Dec. 1919-1 Juni 1932."
Waardering
Het gedenkteken uit 1932 is van algemeen belang vanwege de architectuur- en cultuurhistorische waarde als gaaf en representatief voorbeeld van een gedenkteken waarin een zitbank en lantaarn zijn gecombineerd, ontworpen door A.J. Kropholler en gesitueerd in de nabijheid van eveneens door hem ontworpen gebouwen.

Introduction
MEMORIAL, the "Burgemeester Wendelaar Lantern", was erected in 1932 to the design of A.J. Kropholler on the occasion of the 12½-year official jubilee of mayor W. C. Wendelaar and presented by the people of Alkmaar. The memorial was originally situated on the Canadaplein near the St. Laurenskerk and the buildings designed by Kropholler on the Kerkplein and St. Laurensstraat. In 2000 the memorial was relocated from the Canadaplein to the Koorstraat.
Description
The memorial consists of a 7 metre high tapering square column built in cloister bond with a bench at the base and a copper lantern as its crowning element. Above the concrete basement the bench consists of granite blocks and above this is a granite band with the inscription: "Presented by the citizens to mayor W.C. Wendelaar. 1 Dec. 1919-1 June 1932."
