Inleiding

Description
Introduction
In 1887, designed by A. Nijland in Dutch neo-renaissance style, a SCHOOL was built, erected as a primary school and originally named 'Koningin Emmaschool'. The school with three classrooms was provided with an extension on the north side around 1900 containing two additional classrooms. Until 1997, the building housed the public primary school 't Palet. The building with its classrooms is situated on the river Vecht. The school playground is located on the other side of the building. On the rear grounds at the school playground there is a shed from the period of construction that falls outside the protection.
Description
The school, located on the Zuilenselaan at the corner with the Laan van Zuilenveld, is composed of two main volumes situated side by side. Both building parts are erected on a virtually rectangular ground plan. The left building part from 1887 comprises one storey under a gabled roof covered with muted Dutch tiles with the ridge direction parallel to the Vecht. The right building part comprises one storey under a flat roof. The facades, built in red brick, are furnished with plastered and natural stone accents, such as keystones. The left part of the front facade or east facade (facing the Vecht) consists in the centre of a central risalit with a shaped gable. The facade is terminated by a fan motif. At the top is a wrought-iron weathervane with the date 1887. On the corners of the facade, pilasters are applied with pinacles. In the risalit is a large three-light window with six-pane glazing bars under a basket arch. The spandrel is furnished with sgraffito work showing the coat of arms of Zuilen, flanked by shield bearers with clubs. On either side flowers and leaf scrolls are applied. The shaped gable contains a window with the date '1887' in the spandrel. On either side of the risalit, the facade contains a three-light window with six-pane glazing bars under three basket arch-shaped spandrels. The right part of the facade (of the later building part) is furnished with pilasters with spherical finials on the corners. The facade contains three three-light windows with worked wooden window frame styles. The windows have a glazing bar arrangement whereby the middle vertical glazing bars are narrower than the outer ones. The upper parts of the panes are tilted inward and furnished with top-hung casements.
The south facade has a stepped gable termination with a hexagonal pinacle-shaped termination topped with a wrought-iron crown. The facade is blind except for a six-pane window at the top. A stone has been set in the facade with the inscription: 'The foundation stone laid by the honourable gentleman J.C. Plomp, mayor of this municipality since July 1861, 17 June 1887.' The north facade of the main volume from 1887 has an identical termination. The facade of the extension on the north side is blank.
The west facade is plastered and furnished with ornamental wall anchors. A bronze school bell hangs on the facade of the extension. Against the facade of the building part from 1887, a non-original, lower extension of one storey under a flat roof has been placed, which falls outside the protection. The extension against the enlargement has a U-shaped ground plan, comprises one storey and contains a number of small windows. This extension is of secondary importance. The interior layout is partly original. The classrooms are accessed via a corridor on the west side. The window arrangements with top-hung casements tilted inward and flat top-hung casements situated directly thereupon are of importance. On the Vecht side, in front of the classrooms, there is a small garden surrounded by an iron railings fence.
Valuation
The school building is of general significance owing to its architectural-historical value as a relatively intact and recognizable example of a school building in Dutch neo-renaissance style, designed by A. Nijland from the 19th century. Also of cultural-historical value owing to its former function within the former municipality of Zuilen, as well as of ensemble value owing to its location on the river Vecht in the centre of Oud-Zuilen.
