The register's description

Inleiding

Introduction

A Gereformeerde church of the hall-church type built in 1892 in the eclectic manner. The church was in use until recently as a photography studio and is being converted into a funeral centre. The church is situated on the Kerkweg, which is not in fact named after this church, in the centre of Maarssen.

Description

The hall-church of five bays, situated with its ridge direction perpendicular to the Kerkweg, is built on a rectangular plan and comprises one storey beneath a gabled roof covered with closefitting Dutch tiles between gable ends. The facades are built up in red brick. Red facing brick is applied in the front facade at stretches and arches. At lintels, springer stones, springer stones and coping, whitewashed plasterwork is applied.

The symmetrically arranged front facade (south) is a gable end with climbing arch frieze below the roof boards. In the middle of the facade a risalit with a stepped gable has been placed. The central risalit has on the ground floor a double bracketed door with heavy hinges beneath a lintel with a pigeon-darter. Above the lintel a large segmental arch spandrel is fitted. Just above the lintel a segmental arch is fitted. The arch field is filled with decorative brickwork. Above the arch a broad band of dentil moulding and two cast-iron round-arch windows, separated by a mullion. In the middle above the two windows a cast-iron grille window is placed. In the apex a wall anchor is placed. The transition to the stepped gable is formed by projecting worked stones with coping stones. The facade sections on either side are executed with corner quoins. In both facade sections is a bricked-up round-arch window with springer stone.

The left and right side facades are side walls of five bays, separated by quoins. The wall surfaces are finished at the top with a dentil moulding. In the middle three wall surfaces is a cast-iron round-arch window. The rear facade has at the apex a partially bricked-up round-arch window. The extension against the rear facade falls outside the protection.

In the interior the original roof truss structure with arch ties, tie-rods, worked corbels and boarding is of importance.

Valuation

The church is of general importance because of its architectural-historical value as an example of a hall-church in the eclectic manner from 1892, because of the well-preserved state of the principal form and material use. Of cultural-historical value because of its former function as a hall-church for Gereformeerden.
