Inleiding

Introduction

Residential building on a rectangular ground plan in the transverse direction on the building line of the Roermondsestraat in Venlo. The building is exemplary of the distinguished architecture along the approach roads to and from the city centre. The building was constructed in 1902 in Neo-Renaissance style with some reminiscences of Art Nouveau and is attributed to architect Henry Seelen.

Description

Two-storey building with roof storey and basement on a rectangular ground plan beneath a stepped gable with truncated mansard roof with tiles in German bond. The building has a sandstone plinth and a facade of red brick with brickwork in half-brick bond. At the level of the ground floor, the facade is articulated by horizontal bands of ceramic brick. The building has rectangular T-windows beneath cast-iron, with rosette-decorated lintels; these lintels are crowned by a sandstone, inverted ogee, which on either side of the lintel is supported by a console. Above this lintel with its crowning, there is finally a brick segmental arch. The segmental arches of the windows on the ground floor are compressed; the segmental arches of the windows in the roof storey are provided with natural stone skewbacks and keystones and filled with decorative brickwork. The fanlights of the T-windows have a glazing bar division of 8 small window panes. The frames are of wood and the windows are provided with a sandstone windowsill.

The FRONT FACADE is asymmetrical in composition with a stepped gable and a slightly recessed facade element. From bottom to top, the facade has the following composition. On the lower left is the front door beneath a short sandstone canopy with above it a small fanlight in wooden frames with decorative wrought ironwork; above this, at the level of the fanlights of the windows, a second fanlight, similar to those of the windows. To the right of the front door is the slightly projecting facade element in which on the ground floor there are two basement windows, which are provided with decorative wrought iron. The sandstone plinth rises slightly above these small windows and is crowned by two modest sandstone ornaments. Above these ornaments runs across the entire length of the facade a sandstone decorative moulding which at the level of the two windows situated to the right of the door projects to form window ledges.

Above the segmental arches of door and windows is, in the plane of the first floor, a sandstone decorative moulding with decorations of garlands of fruit, which are connected to one another by means of ribbons. In the facade plane of the first floor are three windows, one on the left side, and two windows in the slightly projecting facade element. This facade element is accentuated in the plane of the first floor by sandstone ornaments at the corners of this element. The three windows are provided on either side with three sandstone ornaments.

In the roof storey on the left is a small square roof window with centre and intermediate mullion. To the right of this is the STEPPED GABLE with scrollwork and pediment crowning, which rests on a sandstone decorative moulding with ornamented sawtooth pattern. In the centre of the stepped gable is a window, which is slightly smaller than the other described windows and whose fanlight is divided into only four - instead of eight - small window panes. On either side of this window is a diamond head, whose four points point to a sandstone ball projecting from the facade. At the level of these balls, the facade projects outward, above this the facade projects inward again. The beginning of the out- and in-projections is crowned with stylised natural stone pyramids. Between this last inward projection and the pediment crowning is a sandstone cartouche containing the date "1902".

The REAR FACADE is very plain and shows on the lower left segmental arch-shaped basement windows, above which is the conservatory with renewed windows. The roof of the conservatory forms the balcony for the first floor, onto which a double-leaf door and two rounded fanlights open. In the plane of the roof storey is a T-window with rounded fanlight. Diagonally to the right of this, halfway between the roof storey and the first floor, is a smaller, rounded window for lighting of the staircase. The right part of the rear facade is formed by the two-storey kitchen extension beneath a flat bitumen roof. In the left side facade of the kitchen extension are, on the ground floor, two windows with rounded fanlight, as well as one segmental arch-shaped basement window, and on the first floor three windows. On the rear of the extension, an entrance - realised at a later date - has been closed off and replaced by a new window.

The building still contains various elements from the original INTERIOR. The hall still has the authentic wooden staircase with richly ornamented main baluster with goblet-shaped crowning. The ceiling has simple stucco with - halfway along the passage - two consoles with floral motifs. In the en-suite rooms, to the right of the central passage, the ceilings are provided with a stucco rosette with a double decorative moulding and corner ornaments in floral Art Nouveau style. The conservatory also has (simple) Art Nouveau stucco. The rear room has a marble fireplace in Neo-Louis XIV style; the front room also has a marble fireplace, but in much simpler execution. The parquet floor in the rear room is still original, that in the front room has been renewed. Suite doors and panelled doors are also still present. The basement shows in the tile floors of the (former) shower and kitchen still traces of the old function as living quarters for the staff.

Valuation

The object is of general importance. It is of cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and socio-economic development, namely the establishment of residences in the existing urban fabric, in particular along approach roads to and from the city from the end of the 19th century; it is also of importance as an example of the typological development of the residential building. The object is of architectural-historical importance on account of the aesthetic qualities of the architectural design in combination with some remarkable details: the cast-iron lintels and rich detailing and preserved interior elements. Furthermore, the object has some ensemble value through its location on an approach road and is of importance on account of its integrity.
