Omschrijving complexonderdeel 1:
Het HEILIG HARTKLOOSTER, klooster van de Missiezusters (SSpS) te Steyl bestaat voor het merendeel uit verschillende vleugels van vier bouwlagen met kap en bevat tevens een kapel. De oostzijde (achter) en de westzijde van de kloostervleugels bestaan uit lagere gebouwen ter hoogte van één tot twee lagen met kap. De ingangspartij aan de Zustersstraat bevat de centrale kapel, rechts de voormalige (inmiddels gemoderniseerde) lekenkapel en links de (inmiddels gemoderniseerde) kapel voor de retraitanten. De laatste twee kapellen staan schuin op de centrale kapel; in één van de kapellen staat het grafmonument van Helena Stollenwerk (1852-1900), medestichteres van de Missiezusters. Helena Stollenwerk werd in 1995 zalig verklaard. Haaks op de lekenkapel en de kapel voor de retraitanten staan twee verblijfsvleugels, die op hun beurt aansluiten op de centrale kapel. Op het dak staan spitse torentjes. De rechtervleugel bevat de voormalige ingang van het gedeelte waar de Slotzusters verbleven. In de zuidgevel van het klooster is in een geveltop een natuurstenen reliëf geplaatst, voorstellende twee uitgespreide handen met daarboven een duif. In de bakstenen (tuin)muur pal tegenover de hoofdingang van het klooster (zijde Zustersstraat) staat een Heilig Hartbeeld opgesteld met daaronder de tekst "Pax Vobis". Het Heilig Hartbeeld toont Christus in orantehouding, in een nis, die deel uitmaakt van een enkele tientallen meters lange (tuin)muur. Deze muur is door middel van pijlers geleed, de pijlers zijn voorzien van gecementeerde, pyramidevormige mutsen. De huidige hoofdingang sluit aan op de westelijke kapel en heeft een verhoogd volume en een gedecoreerde verschijningsvorm. De centrale kapel heeft een samengesteld dak met topgevels, in bewerkte nissen staan beelden van de drie aartsengelen opgesteld, eronder zijn grote spitsboogvensters geplaatst en op de hoeken steunberen. De kapellen zijn door gangen met elkaar verbonden, de uitvoering en geleding bestaat uit o.m. spitsboogvensters, steunberen, fries en dakrand, dakkapellen. Onder de kapel en kapellen bevinden zich de voormalige refter, een bibliotheek en een gastenzaal. Het klooster is opgetrokken in grauw-rode baksteen, in kruisverband gemetseld. Onderdelen als bijvoorbeeld beeldnissen en dakranden zijn in helrode baksteen uitgevoerd. In de verbindingen van de bruggen is een combinatie van baksteen en beton verwerkt, de buitenzijden van de bakstenen balustrade zijn geprofileerd uitgevoerd. Hardstenen accenten worden o.m. aangetroffen in afzaten, bruggen, dorpels van ramen en deuren, topgevels, tuinmuren. De ingangspartij aan de Zustersstraat heeft authentieke buitendeuren, tuinmuur met fraai smeedijzeren hekwerk. Inwendig is de oude indeling met interieurafwerking grotendeels behouden gebleven. De hoofdstructuur van gangen, trappenhuizen en vertrekken bleef in tact, hetzelfde geldt voor de decoratie van deze structuur. De centrale kapel heeft een brede middenbeuk en twee smallere ter zijde. De uitvoering van de kapel bestaat o.a. uit houten kerkbanken met snijwerk, neogotisch houten hoofdaltaar, pilasters met acanthusbekroning, hoge glas-in-loodramen en kruisribgewelven. In de voormalige lekenkapel is de vloer vernieuwd en het oxaal dichtgezet, verder o.m. een balustrade-restant met vierpasmotief, houten paneeldeur, kruisribgewelven. Verder maken o.a. een aula, bibliotheek, gastenzaal, museum (met in het voorportaal een gietijzeren trap,) met verzamelingen uit alle werelddelen in de originele opstelling en dito vitrinekasten, en een refter deel uit van het Heilig Hartklooster.

The SACRED HEART CONVENT, convent of the Missionary Sisters (SSpS) in Steyl consists for the most part of different wings of four storeys with roof and also contains a chapel. The east side (rear) and the west side of the convent wings consist of lower buildings with a height of one to two storeys with roof. The entrance section at Zustersstraat contains the central chapel, to the right the former (meanwhile modernised) lay chapel and to the left the (meanwhile modernised) chapel for retreatants. The latter two chapels are set at an angle to the central chapel; in one of the chapels stands the funeral monument of Helena Stollenwerk (1852-1900), co-foundress of the Missionary Sisters. Helena Stollenwerk was beatified in 1995. At right angles to the lay chapel and the chapel for retreatants stand two residential wings, which in turn connect to the central chapel. On the roof stand pointed turrets. The right wing contains the former entrance to the section where the Slotzusters resided. The chapels are connected to each other by corridors, the execution and articulation consists of, among other things, pointed arch windows, buttresses, frieze and roof edge, roof chapels. Below the chapel and chapels are the former refectory, a library and a guest hall. The convent is built in grey-red brick, laid in Flemish bond. Components such as for example carved niches and roof edges are executed in bright red brick. In the connections of the bridges a combination of brick and concrete has been used, the outer sides of the brick balustrade are executed in profiled form. Hard stone accents are found, among other things, in plinths, bridges, sills of windows and doors, shaped gables, garden walls. The entrance section at Zustersstraat has authentic exterior doors, garden wall with fine wrought iron fencing. Internally the old layout with interior finishes has been largely preserved. The main structure of corridors, staircases and rooms remained intact, the same applies to the decoration of this structure. The central chapel has a broad central nave and two narrower ones on either side. The execution of the chapel consists of, among other things, wooden church pews with carved work, neo-gothic wooden high altar, pilasters with acanthus capitals, high stained glass windows and cross-ribbed vaults. In the former lay chapel the floor has been renewed and the gallery sealed off, furthermore, among other things, a balustrade remnant with quatrefoil motif, wooden panelled door, cross-ribbed vaults. Furthermore, an assembly hall, library, guest hall, museum (with a cast iron staircase in the antechamber), with collections from all parts of the world in the original arrangement and corresponding display cases, and a refectory form part of the Sacred Heart Convent.
