Inleiding

Introduction

Former FISH SMOKERY from 1859, built on the commission of the Regtdoorzee family. Judging by the construction joints and the masonry of the right side elevation (N), the building came into being in phases. The object is located on the western harbour quay, where following the construction of Huizen harbour in 1853-1854 a series of fish smokeries was built. After the closure of the fish smokery in 1927, the building was in use by various earthenware factories until 1984. After a short period of vacancy, the building was converted in 1987-1989 into a restaurant and exhibition space. The wooden veranda and terrace against the front elevation were added in 1987.

N.B. The later additions against the right side and rear elevations are of minor importance for the protection.

Description

The former fish smokery consists of three rectangular building volumes of equal length (the front building where the fish were strung on rods, the smoke hall, and the rear building in which the horses and carts stood) and a shorter fourth hall (most likely a basket-maker's workshop). The smoke hall is narrower than the other halls. Each of the four halls (called "hangen" in Huizen) has a height of one storey under a gabled roof with the ridge line parallel to the street. The front slope of the front building is covered with red and smoky Dutch tiles laid in a checkerboard pattern, four tiles per section. On the rear slope of the front building lie red interlocking tiles. The fourth hall has a covering of smoky Dutch tiles (the second and third halls are covered with asbestos cement corrugated sheeting). The outer facades are built in red Flemish bond brick in diagonal bond with flush joints. For the rear and side elevations machine-made brick is used with the exception of the right side elevation of the front building which is built in hand-moulded brick. The front facade was originally unplastered. At the height of the attic beam course, the facades are provided with wall anchors. At the top of the front and rear facades is a wooden guttering. The front facade (E) has a series of six-pane sash windows with mirrored shutters. Between the five windows in the right half of the facade the building year 1859 is marked with date anchors (possibly added later). To the right of the right window is a hardstone foundation stone with the text "THE FIRST STONE LAID/ BY/ GESIENA REGTDOORZEE PD/ 12 MARCH 1859." In the right side elevation (N), on the left is a blocked-up window next to which is a door. With the exception of the smoke hall, each hall has in the middle above the right side elevation a four-pane casement attic window (the windows and doors in the left side elevation are not original).

The rear elevation (W) of the rear building has on the right a hinged door with on either side a round-arch small window, and to the left of this a semi-circular cast-iron stable window (in the rearward southern section of the rear building stood the horses that pulled the carts with which the firewood for the smoke chambers was fetched).

In the restaurant, in memory of the original function of the building, a number of doors from the 19 smoke chambers into which the smoke hall was subdivided have been retained. The numbered doors are executed as horizontally divided hinged doors of wide sections hung on hand-forged thumb hinges (in the plastered east wall of the smoke hall, doors 1, 2, 3, 4, 16, 17 and 19 remain, in the west wall the doors of the three southern smoke chambers 17, 18 and 19). By opening the upper door the smoking process in the smoke chamber could be observed. From the horse stable in the southern section of the rear building remains a rectangular feeding trough of red brick with two lead-lined feeding troughs.

Valuation

The former fish smokery is of general importance on account of its cultural, architectural and social-historical value as a relatively intact surviving and rare remnant of the fish-processing industry in Huizen, which emerged in the middle of the 19th century. The building has situational value owing to its image-determining location at the old harbour.
