Inleiding

Introduction

On a five-way junction in the forested dune area directly west of Castricum stands a GAME KEEPER'S HOUSE named "Kijk-uit". The house, presumably dating from the last quarter of the 19th century, stands in the sight line of the Kramersweg, the access road to the dune area. The architecture has characteristics of both chalet style (roof edge) and neo-renaissance (brickwork patterns).

N.B. The low extension against the rear facade falls outside the protection.

Description

A dwelling house of two storeys erected on a rectangular ground plan, under a gabled roof covered with black-glazed flat Frisian tiles that project substantially on all four sides. The roof overhangs are supported by corbels set in the wall with an in- and outswinging form. Under the roof overhang above the side facades a corrugated decorative strip is applied against which a zinc gutter. The gabled front and rear facades have smooth wind bracing. Two square chimneys stand on the roof. The outer walls are laid in red machine-made brickwork (format 17-18 x 4 cm) in cross bond with struck joints. Above the ground floor the brickwork of the front and side facades is enlivened by brickwork patterns each consisting of three courses of yellow machine-made brickwork (same format). The lintels above the windows and doors in these three facades are also laid in contrasting yellow brickwork. At the level of the floor above are ornamental wall anchors set all around (with a double lily form).

Central in the symmetrical front facade (NE) is a six-pane sash window and above it a tall and arched double balcony door with three panes arranged vertically in each door leaf (originally there was a balcony here). At the top of the gable is the name "KIJK-UIT" painted in white letters.

The left side facade (SE) facing Bredeweg has two six-pane sash windows below between which the front door, a jointed door of vertical beaded boards with a low-slung fanlight above. Above the right window there is on the first floor a third window as below. The right side facade (NW) likewise has three six-pane sash windows: on the left both below and above, and on the right only below. In the middle below is a partially subsequently (at the top) sealed cellar window fitted with a pivoting window with iron bars. In the middle of the first floor is a drop window (at the level of the landing). The rear facade (SW) has on the first floor a cross window with two pivot windows below and two drop windows above.

The INTERIOR is still largely in the original condition and contains among other things a sleeping alcove on the ground floor and first floor.

Valuation

The dwelling house is of general importance on grounds of cultural and architectural-historical value as a well-preserved example of a game keeper's house from the last quarter of the 19th century, erected in a building style influenced by chalet style and neo-renaissance. The house has additional situational value because of its location at a crossroads and in the sight line of the access road to the dune area.
