Inleiding
De in de stijl van het traditionalisme gebouwde BEGRAAFPLAATSKAPEL van het voormalig College St. Ludwig te Vlodrop ligt aan de ingang van de BEGRAAFPLAATS die eveneens behoort bij St. Ludwig. De BEGRAAFPLAATS deed dienst als de laatste rustplaats voor docenten en studenten en andere bewoners van het voormalig college en ligt aan de rand van de bossen in Vlodrop - Station. Na de overname van het terrein van St. Ludwig door MERU (Maharishi European Research University) is de begraafplaatskapel eigendom geworden van Staatsbosbeheer. Deze renoveerde de kapel en nam haar op in educatieve wandelingen. De begraafplaats en begraafplaatskapel zijn nu duidelijk gescheiden van St. Ludwig/MERU door een afrastering. Vanaf de kapel kan men in de verte het voormalige hoofdgebouw van St. Ludwig ontwaren.
De begraafplaatskapel werd gebouwd in de periode 1906-1909, gelijktijdig met de bouw van St. Ludwig naar ontwerp Th. Borren (priester-architect).
De aanleg van de BEGRAAFPLAATS dateert eveneens uit de periode 1906-1909.
Omschrijving
De BEGRAAFPLAATSKAPEL is bereikbaar middels een entreepartij. Deze entreepartij bevat links en rechts een entreepoort en diverse bakstenen kolommen die door een smeedijzeren hekwerk worden verbonden. Deze poorten verlenen toegang tot de BEGRAAFPLAATS. De begraafplaatskapel heeft een kruisvormige plattegrond op een achthoekige betonnen plaat. De kapel is opgetrokken in baksteen in twee bouwlagen onder een zadeldak met shingels. Het metselverband is in staand verband uitgevoerd. In het centrum van de kapel, op het kruispunt van de kruisarmen, staat een dakruiter. Het klokje is hieruit verdwenen. Onder de dakrand bevindt zich getrapt decoratief metselwerk in de topgevels en in een bloktandlijst in de overige gevelvlakken. Op de acht hoeken van de vier kruisarmen bevinden zich steunberen, in gelede vorm. Deze worden afgedekt met een gecementeerde afzaat. De gehele kapel is omgeven door een uitspringende plint afgedekt met een rollaag van baksteen.
De entree is een rechthoekige houten deur in een getrapte spitsboogvormige omlijsting met glas-in-lood bovenlicht en een natuursteendorpel. De deur is voorzien van authentiek hang- en sluitwerk. In de topgevel bevindt zich een rond glas-in-lood raam in een ronde vensteropening. De kruisarmen links en rechts van de entree hebben ieder in de kopgevel een spitsboogvormig venster met glas-in-lood raam en voorzetraam alsmede een natuursteendorpel. In de top van deze gevels bevindt zich een rond venster met glas-in-lood raam.
De kruisarm die naar het kerkhof wijst heeft een blinde gevel in de eerste bouwlaag en een rond venster met glas-in-lood raam in de topgevel.
Het INTERIEUR van de kerkhofkapel is zeer rijk van ontwerp en decoratie. In alle kruisarmen en de viering treffen we kruisribgewelven aan, die samenkomen in een sierrozet op het plafond. Spitsbogen vormen de overgang van de viering naar de vier kruisarmen. Deze spitsbogen zijn rijk voorzien van decoratieve muurschilderingen, die eveneens worden aangetroffen in alle hoeken van de kapel waar de kruisribben uitmonden. In de kruisarm met de blinde gevel een altaar met een bijbels tafereel, bekroond met een goudkleurig baldakijn aan de wand. Aan een kolom is nog een authentiek wijwatervat bevestigd. De plavuizen vloer is eveneens authentiek. De wanden zijn omstreeks 1995 in stijl opnieuw geverfd.
De achter de kapel gesitueerde begraafplaats bezit een specifieke aanleg bestaande uit een aantal ongelijkvormige geometrische compartimenten met daarin de gietijzeren grafkruisen. Een taxushaag omgeeft de begraafplaats die een oppervlakte bezit van ongeveer dertig bij vijftig meter.
Waardering
De begraafplaatskapel van het voormalig College St. Ludwig is van bijzonder belang voor de geschiedenis van de architectuur. De begraafplaatskapel heeft een duidelijke - ook architectonische - relatie met College St. Ludwig. The CEMETERY CHAPEL is accessible by means of an entrance courtyard.
