The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

Directly to the west of the Defence Canal, in 1939 an EARTH RAMPART was constructed using soil from the canal, provided at the rear with an access road. The rampart made it possible to conceal the exits of the casemates and the rear resistance line from the enemy's sight. Moreover, the rampart offered the advantage that the personnel in semi-permanent positions had a better overview of the field of fire. After the war, the profile of the rampart was altered in most places. This was partly done because Rijkswaterstaat around 1962 locally constructed a broad inspection path passable by motor vehicles along the canal. Over small distances, through land consolidation, the entire rampart has disappeared and often nothing more can be seen than a route marking in the form of a wooden rampart. The major exception concerns the section of the rampart which is situated directly to the north of the military air base De Peel.

Description.

The earth rampart has a height of approximately two metres on the front side, and a width of approximately 15 metres. Towards the rear it slopes down sharply. At Venray, between casemate K59 and the Peelweg (N277), the rampart is present over large sections, but in cut-away form due to the construction of the aforementioned inspection path. The most valuable section of the rampart is the section with cadastral designation VRY00 H 02671. This section begins directly to the south of the Peelweg and runs to the northern boundary of the military airfield De Peel: here the rampart still has its original pre-war profile. This profile consists of the rampart being directly constructed on the western side of the canal and having the aforementioned dimensions. In the rampart, S-casemates were originally built every 200 to 400 metres which could provide continuous flanking fire on the canal. No casemates are present on this specific section of the rampart. As a result, there is no longer any trace of the original communication trenches, bent crosswise through the rampart from rear to front side, leading to the entrances of the casemates. Between casemate K49 and casemate K30 the rampart has been preserved in a more fragmentary manner. It is, however, important to note that the unsurfaced access road at the rear of the rampart has been partially preserved. However, as far as Venray is concerned – where present – it lies on the territory of the province of Noord-Brabant.

Valuation.

The earth rampart is of general importance and has cultural-historical value as a distinctive expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War, and is as such an important document of military history. The earth rampart is of architectural and building-historical importance because of the distinctive use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, in particular in adapting water management for military purposes. The structure is also important for the typological development of various defence objects and structures concerning national land defence.

The earth rampart has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole: on one hand as part of land defence (the whole of the positions on the eve of the Second World War), and on the other hand as an important (structuring) component of the Peel area which is of cultural-historical importance as a military landscape. The rampart has a particular historical-spatial relationship with the anti-tank ditch, roads, waters and soil conditions of the area. This interconnection also gives the complex a great historical experiential value.

Furthermore, attention must be drawn to the integrity of the entire complex. Moreover, the entire position as a large-scale military complex and reminder of a large-scale defence measure in relation to the Second World War in Limburg is rare.
