The register's description

Inleiding.

Introduction.

A few metres north of S-casemate K33 lies across the Defence Canal a weir and distribution work S7. This belongs to the original design of the Defence Canal and dates from 1939. By means of the distribution work the height of the water level in the Defence Canal could be regulated and possibly inundations could be carried out. The weir is defended by the aforementioned casemate.

Description.

Each weir, which is positioned at right angles to the trace of the Defence Canal, consists of a concrete monolith of approximately fifteen metres in length, which is at most one metre thick and has an estimated height (partly below the water surface) of at most approximately three metres. The height of the fixed concrete weir opening varies according to the needs at the location. In a single instance the opening is divided by a concrete column, but at Venray it is everywhere a single wide opening. Sometimes the steel sluice, or part of it, is still present. Of importance are the remaining obstructions that have been placed on the piers and sluice: sharp downward-directed pins, or else projecting teeth, were meant to make infantry crossings impossible. The latter components are no longer present at this weir.

Assessment.

The distribution work is of general importance. It has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the reinforcement and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and is as such an important document of military history. It is of importance from an architectural and construction-historical perspective due to the particular use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, in particular in the adaptation of water management for military purposes. It is also of importance for the typological development of various defence objects and structures regarding national territorial defence.

The object has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole: on the one hand as part of territorial defence (the whole set of positions on the eve of the Second World War), and on the other hand as an important (structuring) component of the Peel region which is of cultural-historical importance as a military landscape. The anti-tank ditch has a particular historical-spatial relationship with roads, waterways and soil conditions of the area. This interweaving also gives the complex considerable experiential value.

Further attention should be drawn to the integrity of the entire complex. In this regard the entire position as a large-scale military complex and reminder of a large-scale defence measure executed in relation to the Second World War in Limburg is rare.
