The register's description

Inleiding.

Omschrijving.

Introduction.

North of casemate K40 and slightly north of the bridge, on the western quay of the Defence or Peel Canal stands the S-casemate K41, dating from 1939-1940. The embankment at this location has been largely excavated away.

Description.

The casemate has, due to planting on the eastern foreground of the canal, no longer any relationship with the open fields of fire which are still so clearly present just south of the bridge (Zeilbergse weg). The casemate is in good condition and shows no visible traces of combat operations. For an extensive description of this type of casemate we refer to the complex description (Peel-Raamstelling municipality Venray, number: 568400).

Valuation.

The casemate is of general importance. The object has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a cultural and geographical development, namely the fortification and subsequent defence of the Netherlands during the Second World War and is as such an important document of military history. It is of architectural and construction-historical importance due to its distinctive use of materials and the application of modern materials and techniques, in particular in the working of reinforced concrete. It is also of importance for the typological development of various defence objects and structures concerning national land defence.

The object has ensemble values as an essential component of a larger whole: on the one hand as part of the land defence (the entirety of fortifications on the eve of the Second World War), and on the other hand as an important (structuring) component of the Peel area which is of cultural-historical importance as a military landscape. The casemate has a particular historical-spatial relationship with roads, waters and soil conditions of the area. This interweaving also gives the complex great perceptual value. Furthermore, attention should be drawn to the completeness of the entire complex. As such, the entire fortification as a large-scale military complex and reminder of a large-scale defence measure executed in relation to the Second World War in Limburg is rare.
