Omschrijving
LANDHUIS (1) naar ontwerp van ir. F.A.
F.A. ESCHAUZIER

Description
Description
COUNTRY HOUSE (1) designed by ir. F.A. Eschauzier, located on the south side of the driveway. At the client's request, materials were predominantly used that require little or no maintenance. The country house is built on an approximately P-shaped floor plan, derived from the so-called 'north-corridor plan' originating from England. The country house has one storey and is composed of two parallel wings on either side of an open courtyard, with the kitchen and servants' rooms on the north and on the south, in line with each other, the living room, study and dining room. The hall connects both on the west side, the pantry on the east side. The first floor follows the layout below: bedrooms for parents, children and guests on the south, those for the servants opposite. In the lower wing located at right angles on the west side are a hunting room, workshop, garage and laundry. The four wings surrounding the courtyard of the main building are provided with gabled roofs. All roofs are provided with red slate tiles and have roof overhangs resting on sandstone slabs. The hipped roof of the wing in which the garage is located connects in a flowing manner to the roof of the north wing of the main building. At the ridge ends of the roofs of the north and south wings of the main building are tall brick chimneys. The large roof planes are enlivened in various places by roof dormers with flat roofs. Exceptions are the roof dormer with curved roof located above the main entrance and a roof dormer located in the southern roof slope of the south wing under a hipped roof with slate tiles. On the ridge of the north wing there is also a small bell tower with a scale roof. The main building is surrounded on the south side facing the heath by a terrace lined with large blocks of yellow Morley sandstone. The core of the house consists of a reinforced concrete frame. The outer facades are built on a plinth of Eifel tufa stone made from red handmade bricks laid in Flemish bond. The facades bordering the courtyard are executed in yellow handmade bricks enlivened by limestone banding. Also located here in the tower-like extension of the stairwell is a relief by Hildo Krop. The courtyard is paved with stones. The gutters of the building are executed in copper and provided with some monograms. Windows and doors are predominantly executed in bronze. Only the garage doors are executed in plain oak. The windows are mostly provided with leaded glass. Exceptions are two large windows in the rear (south) facade which have a six or eight-part division and are constructed in such a way that they can slide into the basement, making it possible both from the living room and from the dining room to enter the terrace unobstructed. The FRONT FACADE is asymmetrically arranged and consists of the facade of the main building on the left and the wing with garage on the right. The left facade has several windows as well as a remarkable bay window. The entrance portico on the right, provided with a tufa stone frame, has above the portico a relief by Han Richters consisting of a female figure with deer. The entrance has lanterns on both sides and is provided with a double door executed in bronze and glass. The wing in which the garage is located has several windows as well as two double garage doors executed in oak. The LEFT SIDE FACADE consists mainly of the side facades of the north and south wings between which the start of a garden wall is located. The left half of the facade has a portico reached by means of a number of steps with a door and a bay window. On the first floor there is on the left a wrought-iron balcony with recessed balcony doors and on the right a small high-placed window. The right half of the facade has among other things a recessed door to the scullery, stairs to the basement and several windows. Against the garden wall are placed a number of cabinets provided with oak doors. The REAR FACADE of the main building has large windows on both the left and right that can slide into the basement. In the middle is a loggia with windows and a door. The RIGHT SIDE FACADE of the main building has on the left a broad window to which a loggia connects with two doors and a window. To the right of this is a broad window with a single-pane frame. The first floor is provided with two windows. The facade of the wing with garage has several windows as well as a passage with bollards. The INTERIOR of the country house has been preserved virtually intact and is particularly richly and elaborately executed in costly materials according to the design of Eschauzier. The interior of the country house can be considered one of the best preserved and most important residential interiors designed by Eschauzier. The vestibule has a floor with marble inlay executed according to the design of Nel Klaassen, the corridor to the living room is provided with a sandstone vault and the floors of various rooms are provided with parquet floors. The living room has a large fireplace mantel of which the breast is provided with a relief by Han Richters depicting St. George and the dragon. Between the living room and dining room are sliding doors covered in white leather. The connecting spaces are provided with leaded glass according to the design of Erna van Osselen. Furthermore, the house is provided among other things with railings in wrought iron and a kitchen installation from the time of construction.
Valuation
COUNTRY HOUSE, belonging to the historic country estate 'Noorderheide' built in the years 1938-1941 under the influence of Traditionalism commissioned by D.G. van BEUNINGEN according to a design by ir. F.A. ESCHAUZIER
- Of architectural historical value as a fine example of a large and particularly richly executed traditionalist country house from the nineteen thirties of this century. The country house reflects the originally processed influences from English-origin floor plan forms such as the north-corridor plan, work of the English architect Edwin Lutyens, the Austrian architect Oskar Strnad and contemporary Scandinavian architecture. The design of the country house stands out for the high aesthetic qualities of the designs, which are expressed among other things in the fine and careful detailing and the costly use of materials such as the use of tufa stone, sandstone and bronze. The country house has been preserved virtually intact and possesses a richly executed interior. Thus the building still has among other things several fine fireplaces, one of which is provided with sculpture by the sculptor H. Richters. Furthermore, there is among other things a floor in the vestibule with marble inlay and parquet floors. The country house is also of importance for the oeuvre of Eschauzier as the most important country house designed by him.
- Of urban planning value because of its location in a scenically exceptional wooded and heath area east of the Elspeterbosweg between Vierhouten and Elspeet and as the main object of the historic country estate 'Noorderheide'.
- Of cultural-historical value as an expression of a social-economic development characteristic of the municipality of Nunspeet between 1850 and 1940, namely the (temporary) settlement of (new) wealthy individuals in attractive rural areas: in this case the creation of a country residence in the hilly, wooded and heath-rich area of the northern Veluwe edge. The country house is a particularly well-preserved typological example of this housing type from the Interwar period.
