Inleiding

Description
Introduction
Former BUTCHER'S SHOP designed by architect JOH.KORTLANG of Ermelo, commissioned by master butcher S. Klarenbeek located in the village centre of Putten on the Dorpsstraat, at the corner with the Molenstraat. The shop premises were built around 1916 (building application 21-11-1916) in Neo-Renaissance style, which is expressed among other things in the stepped gable and the rich facade detailing with plasterwork. The interior of the premises is important because of the tiled walls. These tiles are not visible at the time of designation, due to the application of partition walls. The premises are well preserved. The layout of the interior has been somewhat modified, when a new entrance to the upper floor was created at the rear of the premises.
Description
The former BUTCHER'S SHOP is a cellaried corner premises, constructed in brickwork on a rectangular ground plan. The narrow front facade faces the Dorpsstraat and the long side facade faces the Molenstraat. The left side facade adjoins the adjoining premises, the rear facade is free-standing. The premises are one storey and a loft storey high and are covered by a high gabled roof, laid with red improved Dutch tiles. At the back of the roof, to the right of the ridge, there is a brick chimney in which the drip moulding detailing of the facades is continued. Water drainage takes place via a profiled, concealed gutter. In the right roof slope there is a dormer window under a gabled roof. This dormer has double six-pane casement windows under a pediment. The facades with hard stone plinth are constructed in Flemish bond. The facades have rich detailing in plasterwork, in the form of drip mouldings, rustication, water moulds and projecting arch stones. Within the facades are windows applied with white-painted frame timber. The windows are closed at the top with straight headers (rear facade) or with segmental arch-shaped corbels (front and side facade), which are arched at the bottom, or double arched. The arch drums are filled with masonry. Most windows are of the cross window type, with shutters provided with eight small panels with hourglass motifs. The asymmetrically arranged FRONT FACADE is executed as a stepped gable. The first storey has on the right a large single-pane window under coupled fanlights filled with leaded glass. On the left is the shop entrance, in a recessed portico. On the left the large shop window adjoins with a rounded corner. Shop door and display window have coupled fanlights with leaded glass, and the whole is set under a segmental arch, with a segmental arch-shaped corbel as described. The shop door is not original. The shop front is closed off by a profiled string course, above which the stepped gable begins. This stepped gable already continues below this string course, by means of plastered setting pieces. The steps of the facade are provided with projecting and profiled coping plates. The facade is articulated by two water moulds and crowned by a corbelled cornice provided with drip mouldings and profiled mouldings, and a sphere at the top. In the stepped gable there are two cross windows of the type already described on the upper floor, provided with shutters. The fanlights contain leaded glass. For the loft a coupled window has been installed. The entire facade is provided with narrow ornamental wall anchors. The RIGHT SIDE FACADE has on the left a large pane under three coupled fanlights. On the right there are two cross windows of the type already described. The facade is slightly corbelled out under the gutter line. The LEFT SIDE FACADE is built against the adjoining premises. The sober REAR FACADE is executed as a pointed gable with projecting setting pieces as in the front facade. The facade is finished with basketwork pattern, and presumably this facade was also a stepped gable. The first storey is still original and has from left to right a cross window provided with shutters under four-pane fanlights, a door with lower panels and nine panes and a small toilet window. The second storey has several new facade openings, on the left a roof window and on the right a door with sidelight. In front of the facade an external staircase has been placed which provides access to the dwelling on the first floor.
The INTERIOR consists of a shop on the ground floor and a dwelling on the upper floor. The shop currently has an L-shaped layout, created because a wall has been removed. At the back of the shop a corridor is partitioned off with the former upper floor staircase and a kitchen. The leaded glass fanlights in the shop are provided with painted glass representations. From right to left a representation of a cow, the head of a bovine and a moralising text. The tiling of the shop interior is known from older photographs, but is currently not visible. The tiling consists of white wall tiles, and decorative and figurative border tiles halfway up the wall and below the connection with the ceiling. Furthermore, there are several figurative tile panels on the walls, provided with a border of decorative border tiles. Two panels show a butcher at work. Three panels have pigs and cattle as subject.
Valuation
Former BUTCHER'S SHOP designed by Kortlang from 1916
-Of architectural historical value as a representative example of a shop premises from the beginning of the twentieth century in Neo-Renaissance style. The premises stand out because of aesthetic qualities in the design and material use. The architectural style applied shows that this style remained in vogue well after the turn of the century, particularly in shop premises. Particularly notable in the premises is the leaded glass in the fanlights and the tiling of the shop space, which in terms of subject matter refers to the original function of the premises.
-Of urban planning value as a characteristic component of the historically grown built-up area on the village street. In the village centre of Putten, the premises play a visually defining role because of its striking appearance and its location at a corner of two streets.
-Of cultural historical value because of the designation of the premises as an expression of a socio-economic development.
