Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
RESIDENCE, originally built as an office for the tax collector. Following post-war reorganisation of the tax service, the office was relocated to Doetinchem. The building continued to serve as a border office until 1975. Until the inventory undertaken within the framework of the M.S.P., this building had been recorded as 'lost', presumably due to a renumbering of the address in the past.
The building was constructed by State Architect C.H. Peters (1847-1932) in neo-renaissance style with elements of Chalet style and dates from approximately 1890 to approximately 1900. Until 1922, Peters was employed by the State Buildings Service in the First District (the region which Gelderland then fell under), which merged into the new State Buildings Service in 1924.
The building is situated at the corner of Anholtseweg and Zwanenburgseweg, south of the centre of Gendringen. Both roads form an access route from Megchelen and Germany to the city centre. The front facade facing Anholtseweg, with its offset gable line, is separated from the road by a small garden with a low perimeter fence. On the plot, at the rear, there is a modern garage, which is not included in the protection. The left side facade borders, separated only by three old trees which are placed close against the facade, directly onto Zwanenburgseweg. Viewed from a south-easterly direction, the building occupies an important visually defining position.
Description
The corner building comprising one storey and an attic floor is laid out on a T-shaped ground plan. It is covered by two gabled roofs placed at right angles to one another with ridges meeting. The roof panel at the rear of the side facade running parallel to Anholtseweg is extended over a single-storey extension and provided with a tall broad chimney that tapers towards the top.
On the ridge of the roof (with suppressed ridge tiles) running parallel to Zwanenburgseweg two tall chimneys are placed with two decorative bands of yellow facing brick and a roll course forming the termination. The overhanging roof is provided with gutters with profiled gutter mouldings on substantial consoles which are openworked at the end gable of the rear and at the left side facade.
The facades constructed in brick are laid in Flemish bond and divided by various double decorative bands. These consist of yellow facing brick laid per course in header or stretcher course. The decorative bands largely align with the eaves, band, and head sill of the windows. The trash beam is terminated by a bevelled plinth and possesses a ventilation grille in each facade. All facades also possess ornamental wall anchors.
The FRONT FACADE facing Anholtseweg is strongly emphasised by the end gable on the left side. On the first storey there is a two-light sash window with two-light fanlight. A segmental arch in red and yellow facing brick above the window closes an arch field in which a lattice motif in red and yellow facing brick. The springstone blocks are formed by yellow facing brick laid in blocks. The head sill of the frame is covered by cut lead slabs. The bevelled brick-built eaves sill of the window rests on the plinth and interrupts the aforementioned yellow decorative band. The type of window described here occurs on all facades and is not further described unless it differs. Variations occur only in the decorative brickwork of the arch fillings.
The attic floor is separated from the first storey by a cornice (which occurs only on the three end facades), consisting of an embattled block course in yellow facing brick. In the gable top is a smaller type of window with eaves sill tiles which is otherwise identical to the window on the first storey and occurs on all end facades on this floor.
The right side facade of this part provided with an end gable possesses on the first storey a window bay with a single-light sash window and single-light fanlight.
The entrance section of the front facade running parallel to the street possesses a panelled door with two-light fanlight above which a segmental arch and arch field, executed in red and yellow facing brick. The door frame rests on stone sills and likewise sill. To the right is a window with three single-light sash windows and single-light fanlights. The flanking windows are narrower than the centre one. Above the window is a broad arch field, closed by a segmental arch as previously described.
The LEFT SIDE FACADE is symmetrically arranged with a door with windows placed on either side. The door possesses a divided pane, above it a two-light fanlight. The door frame rests on stone sills and likewise sill. Arch filling and segmental arch above the door are of the previously described type as are the two flanking windows. The two-light sash window with two-light fanlight occurring on the floor above and above the door is of a different type. The window is almost obscured from view by the overhanging roof line.
The REAR FACADE possesses at the end facade which is terminated by an end gable a (later added) wooden conservatory. This rests on a plinth and a one-brick-high wall. The conservatory with a rectangular ground plan originally possessed double doors with side lights with single-light fanlights on the front. Now two windows have been placed in place of the door. The sides of the conservatory consist of two window bays with divided fanlights. The conservatory is covered with an overhanging flat roof provided with cut corbels. The conservatory is positioned in front of the original door opening. Above the roof a three-light fanlight is still visible with above it an arch field and segmental arch as previously described. The end gable is terminated by a window of the type that occurs on all end facades.
The left side of the rear facade possesses an extension running parallel to the ridge of the gabled roof. The single-storey extension is covered by a roof panel extending from the roof. The left corner springs in and is executed blind. In the left side facade of the extension is an iron-strapped door with a bead profile. The front of the extension possesses on the left two single-light windows with cathedral glass, above terminated by a stretcher course, placed on a brick eaves sill. To the right of this is a two-light panelled door with the frame on stone sills and likewise sill. The segmental arch occurring above the door comprises an arch filling executed entirely in red brick.
The end facade with end gable on the RIGHT SIDE FACADE is identical to that occurring on the front facade. The recessed section located to the right is covered with a roof panel extending from the gabled roof. On the ground floor a window is placed identical to that in the end gable. As regards placement above the trash beam, it differs from the windows on the first storey.
In the INTERIOR the following components are of importance. Apart from the panelled doors, the timber beam ceilings with profiled consoles and timber chimneypiece have been preserved. In the hall there is a half-turn staircase and balustrade with finely carved balusters. In the left front room, the archive cabinets present point to the former function of the house as a border office.
Valuation
The former tax office, which nowadays serves as a residence, was built by State Architect C.H. Peters (1847-1932) in neo-renaissance style with elements of Chalet style and dates from approximately 1890 to approximately 1900.
- Of architectural-historical value is the building in that it forms a rich and detailed example of a border office, around the turn of the century and built in neo-renaissance style. Furthermore, it stands out for its aesthetic qualities in the exterior, such as fine proportions and good detailing in design and material use. It is also important as an example of the development of State border offices along the Dutch border at the beginning of this century. Of these structures very few examples have been preserved.
- Of urban planning value due to its location at a corner where two roads meet and lead to the city centre. The building plays a visually defining role through its siting at the edge of the town and the countryside.
- Of cultural-historical value due to the importance of its function as a border office and thus connected with a State regulation for the positioning of border offices along the Dutch border.
