Inleiding

Description
Introduction
DWELLING, consisting of a transverse corner building of two storeys, originally dating from the 15th century, remodelled in the 17th, 19th and early 20th century, and a rear building on the Heeraaltzstraat, no. 10, viewed from the Hoogstraat a deep, single-storey component, with a facade design from the first quarter of the 20th century; the INTERIOR contains a fireplace seating area from c. 1920.
Description
The distinctive corner building is located at the corner of the Heeraaltzstraat. The gabled roof parallel to the building line carries red tiles. The front facade is seven window bays wide and features ornamental wall anchors, some of which have been relocated. The facades are plastered and unpainted. 19th-century elements include the wooden empire door frame with pilasters and consoles, as well as the cast-iron ornamental grille in front of the basement light to its right. The character of the facade is strongly determined by a remodelling from the first quarter of the 20th century influenced by the chalet style, recognizable in the right-hand roof dormer, the cornice with the gutter brackets and the false joints in the plaster layer. From this plastering it is evident that the carriage entrance on the left was present at that time, or was added then.
The truncated left side facade shows the remains of a large niche. The building has in the interior above both storeys composite beam floors which, as evidenced by the well-preserved key stones, were at least partly renewed in the first half of the 17th century. Various door frames and wooden finishes date from around 1920 and are carefully executed. On the Heeraaltzstraat a single-storey rear building adjoins, Heeraaltzstraat 10, with a gabled roof with red tiles, with the ridge perpendicular to the front building. This building component has been in independent use as a dwelling since the extensive remodelling of the rear building around 1920. Until that time, from the Heeraaltzstraat viewed to the right, there was a back passage (presumably built over, given the old wall anchor in the front facade); that part was taken into use as a corridor (and subsequently altered again), therefore the current entrance is located here. It can be assumed that the facade to the left of it contained an entrance and windows up to that point. The facade is plastered, with the exception of a brick course, which frames the entrance. The fanlight of the sash window to the left of the entrance and the glass pane of the door are executed with a round arch. The aforementioned fanlight and glass pane, as well as the fanlight of the entrance have a small glazing bars. The current position of the chimney, in the middle against the facade now serving as front facade on the Heeraaltzstraat, is unusual. Together with the two flanking small windows it is part of the interior design. The INTERIOR of the rear building, Heeraaltzstraat 10, contains a fireplace seating area from c. 1920. The whole is executed with simple means in the spirit of the Arts and Crafts Movement. The owner was a carpenter and finished the room himself. Against the front facade, in which only two small windows are placed, a chimney structure is built under a lowered ceiling and confined by two cupboards in the corners, with built-in seating on both sides. The dark red seatings are of hardboard. The cupboards have glass doors with partially curved glazing bars. A small moulding with an Indian motif is placed around the small windows, which contain tinted stained glass. On the transition to the rest of the room, a neo-renaissance key stone is placed on the right and left.
The chimney breast is executed as fine work. The yellow tiles of the chimney mantel return in the window sill of the large window directly opposite. That window contains, in addition to window glass, colourful stained glass panels from c. 1920, with rectangular motifs. Wood and stone formats were the source of inspiration here. The room door has a small horizontal pane with stained glass. The two cupboards in the opposite wall are part of the furnishings; the right one is the remnant of the old passage to the front building, the floor tiles are still there. In the kitchen recess a tile wall has been placed of replicated 16th-century tiles, in which two panels are incorporated: one with a dog, one with a cat in 18th-century style. Also in the rest of this part of the building there are details which are recognizably from the same remodelling. The attic has been extended to an almost complete storey. Here too, in simplified form, similar key stones and frames have been applied.
Assessment:
DWELLING consisting of a tall wing and a lower, transversely placed rear building.
- Of architectural and building historical value as an example of a house originally medieval in character, with a development history from the 15th to the 20th century. In this the 17th-century beam floors and the 19th- and 20th-century facade elements play an essential role. The rear building is also of architectural-historical importance as regards part of the INTERIOR with FIREPLACE SEATING AREA as a rare example of a design and execution undertaken independently by a carpenter, whereby numerous contemporary influences from architectural movements led to a harmonious synthesis in the spirit of the Arts and Crafts Movement.
- Of urban planning value due to its distinctive location as substantial corner development with modest rear building, whereby it plays a role in the historic street character of the Hoogstraat and the Heeraaltzstraat.
