TRANSFORMER HOUSE with tile tableau built between 1920 and 1930 commissioned by the P.G.E.M. to the design of type G4L by G. VERSTEEG in business expressionist architectural style. Description

Detached TRANSFORMER HOUSE on rectangular ground plan. The gently sloping hipped roof has a substantial overhang. The facades, built in reddish-brown brick, are laid in half-bond. On the four corners parts of the facades are black tarred. These black facade sections have a border of highlighted yellow bricks and are divided horizontally by adding one highlighted layer of yellow bricks every four brick courses. To the right of centre in the asymmetrically arranged FRONT FACADE is the entrance with steel door of the high-voltage room. The tile tableau is located on the left in the black tarred architrave. The tableau consists of three glazed tiles with the text in yellow relief letters `PROVINCIAL/ ELECTRICITY WORKS'. The entrance with wooden door of the low-voltage room is located in the middle of the symmetrically arranged LEFT SIDE FACADE. The blind REAR and RIGHT SIDE FACADES are symmetrically arranged. The facades are finished with an architrave and a recessed frieze. The architrave consists of three layers of tarred brick which are set between a highlighted brick layer (below) and a highlighted cornice (above), both executed in yellow brick. In the architrave wide wall openings are recessed with five glass bricks. The recessed frieze has on the four corners - corresponding with the aforementioned black facade sections - five highlighted and black tarred brick layers. Air vents are installed in the frieze. The facades are finished with a highlighted cornice. The colours black and yellow in the brickwork refer to the Gelderland colours.
