Inleiding

Introduction

CITY GYMNASIUM with CARETAKER'S DWELLING built in 1881 in neo-Renaissance according to the design of city architect F.H. VAN ETTEGER (1838-1919) commissioned by the city of Zutphen. In 1924 the CARETAKER'S DWELLING was provided with a new front facade. The building is located at the corner of 's Gravenhof and Kerkhof within the built-up area of Zutphen. F.H. VAN ETTEGER, as city architect of Zutphen in the period 1878-1911, was of great importance in building a new city after the demolition of the fortifications. The city gymnasium is a good example of Van Etteger's work in his neo-Renaissance style. The style is recognizable in the natural stone springing, closing and arch stones in the segmental arches, the natural stone horizontal bands and the frequent use of cartouches and mascaron heads.

Description

Symmetrical corner building consisting of two storeys and an attic closed off by a hipped roof covered with muted Dutch tiles. The ninety-degree corner which the facade at 's Gravenhof makes with the facade at Kerkhof is chamfered. The chamfered corner of one bay wide functions as the axis of symmetry for five bays on either side. At the far right of the facade at 's Gravenhof is the former caretaker's dwelling with rectangular floor plan consisting of one storey and an attic floor. The facades with hard stone plinth are built up in brown brickwork in English bond. In addition to brickwork, much use was made of natural stone for the springing, arch and closing stones, horizontal bands, drip mouldings, claw stones, obelisks, cartouches and pediments. Below the profiled brick cornice is a projecting brick semicircular frieze in yellow brick veneer. The FRONT FACADE consists of the axis of symmetry with on the left five bays at Kerkhof, on the right five bays and the stepped gable of the caretaker's dwelling at 's Gravenhof. The entrance section is located in the chamfered corner, the axis of symmetry, consisting of double panel doors with cushion design. A wooden calf separates the panel doors from the semicircular five-light fanlight. The door opening is set back slightly in the facade with profiled brick reveal. The fanlight is closed by a semicircular arch with natural stone springing, arch and closing stones with diamond heads. At the level of the springing stone runs a natural stone horizontal band to the corner. The corner is emphasized in several places by natural stone blocks. The ground floor of this axis is closed off by a frieze of decorative brickwork in red and yellow brick veneer interrupted by natural stone consoles with triglyphs. Above this is a horizontal band with three natural stone cartouches separated from each other by vertical brickwork. In the middle cartouche is the text 'POLITIE', in the left cartouche 'ANNO' and in the right cartouche '1881'. On the first floor are two coupled windows with glazing (2x3)+1 under one reclining elliptical arch with decorative brickwork in the arch soffit. The window opening is, as well as the corners, emphasized by natural stone blocks. The axis ends in a stepped gable with decorative iron wall anchors, an 'oeuil de boeuf' and decorative natural stone closure of the steps. The 'oeuil de boeuf' is enclosed by a roll moulding with at the top and bottom a richly decorated closing piece. Each step is closed off by a natural stone cover plate that continues as a horizontal moulding across the facade. The first step is flanked on both sides by a scroll-shaped claw stone, the second by a natural stone obelisk and the third again by a claw stone with on top a curved pediment on a natural stone frieze. The pediment is crowned by an iron weather vane. Behind the stepped gable is a half-hipped roof covered with slate in Maas bond.

The centre axis of the five bays to the left of the axis of symmetry projects and ends in a stepped gable above the continuous profiled brick cornice. In the gable top of the stepped gable is a four-light sash window closed off by a segmental arch and three wall anchors. On the steps are claw stones and obelisks with on top a triangular pediment. In the five bays are ten regularly distributed sash windows with glazing (3x3)+1. All window openings are emphasized by natural stone blocks and closed off by a reclining elliptical arch with decorative brickwork in the arch soffits. At the level of the springing stones runs a horizontal band. The underdorpels of the windows on the ground floor adjoin the hard stone plinth. Between the two outer window openings is a narrow red-painted semicircular niche with the same natural stone block division. The ground floor ends in a horizontal decorative band consisting of two dentil courses with decorative brickwork in red and yellow brick veneer between them. Below this band is in the projecting axis a frieze as in the chamfered corner, in the other axes are eight regularly distributed wall anchors. The first floor has the same layout and ends in a semicircular frieze below the profiled brick cornice.

The five bays to the right of the axis of symmetry are identical to those on the left of the axis. The stepped gable of the caretaker's dwelling at the far right falls outside the symmetry. The facade with painted plinth is built up in brown brickwork in English bond. The wall openings in the facade on the ground floor are closed off by a reclining elliptical arch with natural stone springing, arch and closing stones with decorative brickwork in the arch soffits. On the left is a double panel door with cassette design and two-light fanlight. To the right of the door are two sash windows with glazing (2x3)+1. The ground floor is closed off by a drip moulding/cornice moulding with in the gable top a four-light attic window closed by a semicircular arch. On either side of the window are two wrought-iron wall anchors which together form the date '1924'. Against the LEFT SIDE FACADE the left neighbouring building adjoins at Kerkhof.

The REAR FACADE consists of two facades at right angles to each other consisting of on the left the rear facade of the caretaker's dwelling followed by five bays of the school building and on the right four bays. On the left in the rear facade of the caretaker's dwelling is a single panel door with two-light fanlight, a single-light toilet window with to the right a three-section window with glazing bars. All wall openings are closed off by a one-and-a-half brick course with an imitation of natural stone springing and closing stones in yellow brick veneer. The facade is closed off by a dentil course below the profiled brick cornice with background hipped roof. Central in the rear roof plane is a roof dormer with four-light casement window and pediment. To the right of the rear facade of the caretaker's dwelling follow the five bays of the school building. The facade with plastered plinth ends in a projecting brick semicircular frieze in yellow brick veneer. The ground floor ends in a dentil course in yellow brickwork. The segmental arch-shaped wall openings are emphasized on both sides by yellow brick veneer as well as the springing and closing stones. The windows are coupled in pairs by four yellow brick veneer horizontal bands. On the ground floor are four sash windows with glazing (3x3)+2 and a door with multi-light fanlight. In the left window is a door installed. On the first floor are five identical sash windows. At right angles to the five bays are four bays with on the floor four identical sash windows. On the left on the ground floor are two sash windows with on the right a later-placed single-storey extension with flat roof. In the roof plane a number of roof lights have been carefully placed with against the facade twice a fire escape leading to a roof dormer with four-light window.

The RIGHT SIDE FACADE is the side facade of the caretaker's dwelling. On the left in this facade is a window opening with four-light window closed off by a semicircular arch with decorative brickwork in the arch soffit. The INTERIOR has been adapted to the current function without too much disturbing the original building. The ceilings have been lowered without creating an extra floor. In the hall is a wooden staircase and an original stucco ceiling. The walls in the hall are provided with simulated joints. The layout has been retained and the attic is used as a classroom.
