Omschrijving

Description

Former DISINFECTION BUILDING (4) dating from 1920-1923, forming part of the complex of the Koninklijke Hollandse Lloyd designed by E. Breman, for quarantine and delousing of emigrants, originally connected with the Lloyd hotel and provided with an inner courtyard. Now only the main wing on the east side remains. The arrangement of the various sanitary rooms and living quarters in the interior of the delousing building was entirely subject to the separation between 'dirty' and 'clean'. The wing is built on a substantially rectangular plan and has above the basement a main storey, two further storeys and an attic storey, and is covered by a gabled roof with red tiles. On the roof pitches are two series of four roof dormers with multiply-articulated windows and with three-sided top. Walls laid in stretcher bond and dark tuff-stone with window openings to the basement. The front and rear facade (N and S) at the gable ends have in the centre tripartite window groups with six-pane frames and vertical brickwork and brick mullions. Behind the windows were the staircases. At the north side is the simple entrance with step and with moulded and profiled surround with natural stone accents. Double wooden panelled door. The facade tops have repeated ogee forms and semicircular termination. At the north facade is a high-placed hoist window with metal grille. The side facades (E and W) have at the corners with the gable facades higher-built masonry with narrow windows. The side facades are otherwise nine bays wide with windows with three-pane vertical articulation; the windows of the main storey of the west side facade are multiply-articulated. In the middle is here a simple door with fanlight, originally providing access to the inner courtyard. At the north and south side of this facade is still the attachment of the connecting corridors to the emigrants' hotel.

Valuation

Former disinfection building dating from 1920-1923 with remaining main wing designed by E. Breman of general importance by reason of cultural-, architectural- and social-historical as well as typological value as a characteristic example of an early twentieth-century, utilitarian service building for the purpose of mass emigration, executed in a sober, German-oriented expressionist brick architecture. Also of importance by reason of ensemble value as a historic-functional component of the Koninklijke Hollandse Lloyd complex.
