Inleiding

Introduction

Advertising MURAL PAINTING for the Virginia cigarettes brand, 'Miss Blanche' after 1925, by Vilmos Huszár (1884-1960), painter and co-founder of De Stijl. Besides painting and designing interiors, Huszár was engaged in designing graphic work for advertising and industry. He was also responsible for the first logo for the magazine De Stijl.

Description

The mural painting is applied to the side facade of the corner house at Tollensstraat 36. It is located in the left part of the north-facing side facade situated on the Achterstraat and covers the entire upper storey and extends to halfway down the ground floor. The rectangular painting, applied to a plaster layer, is set in a moulded frame. The painting shows, against a yellow background, an image of a woman with a hat rendered in abstracted form. She is depicted to the waist, with only her face turned to the side, her sharply cut riding jacket with white roll-neck collar and a gloved hand holding a cigarette at her lips suggesting her upper body. At the bottom of the painting the cigarette brand is shown on three lines with the words 'MISS BLANCHE' in decorative letters and below it in block letters 'VIRGINIA' (in red) and 'CIGARETTES'.

Valuation

Advertising MURAL PAINTING, by Vilmos Huszár, c. 1925.

- Of art-historical importance as a fine and well-preserved example of an advertising mural painting by the renowned painter and co-founder of De Stijl Vilmos Huszár, in which some stylistic characteristics of De Stijl such as the use of primary colours and the schematic representation of the image are present.

- Situational value due to the prominent location at the corner of two parallel roads that lead into the town from a northerly direction.

- Of cultural-historical importance as an example of a painted advertising presentation of a nationally known product. Such paintings appeared on a large scale in the street scene but are now mostly disappeared and as such the painting possesses rarity value.
