Inleiding

Description
Introduction
GATE, built ca. 1860-1870 in a neoclassical style. The gate is provided as a classical triumphal arch with three round-arched passageways with pilasters with Ionic capitals present on wall piers. Above this is an attic, which is crowned by a natural stone ornament bearing the coat of arms of Mgr. J. Zwijssen, Archbishop of Utrecht between 1853 and 1868.
The gate is placed across the full width of the street and originally closed off the grounds of the former episcopal seminary on the southwestern side. In popular usage this area is known as "Papenhoek". On the north side the gate adjoins a chapel and on the south side it is connected to the gatekeeper's lodge which is placed with its back against a medieval corner building. The national monument designation concerns only the aforementioned gate.
Description
The gate, built of brick, is laid in Flemish bond and is executed in natural stone at the location of structural components such as in arches with a keystone, plinths of the pilasters and capitals. The frieze with dentil moulding as well as the attic is executed in wood. The rear side is identical to the front side; the side gables are connected to the aforementioned ancillary buildings.
Valuation
GATE, built ca 1860-1870.
- Of architectural historical importance as a well and carefully preserved example of a gate in neoclassical style. The gate is characterized by balanced proportions and diverse use of materials.
- Of urban design importance due to its location at the end of the Ridderstraat which ends in a northeastern direction at this gate which closes off a Catholic enclave of buildings.
- Of cultural historical importance as part of a episcopal seminary, which expresses a spiritual movement that experienced great revival after the restoration of the episcopal hierarchy in 1853.
