Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The R.C. CHURCH, dedicated to St. ALPHONSUS DE LIGUORI, is a neo-Romanesque cross basilica built in 1898-1900 according to a design by architect C. Franssen, located on the Zandstraat, fronting a deep forecourt. The construction was carried out by contractor F. Raaijmakers from Amsterdam.
On the front side, to the left of the church, the presbytery is situated. To the right of the church runs a path; to the side and at the rear there is an ornamental garden, adjoining the R.C. cemetery located behind it.
Only two nave bays were executed instead of the planned three bays with an entrance section dominated by two towers. The nave was in fact realised at half the originally intended length. In 1934 a 'provisional' portal space flanked by two chapels was added. All this explains the presence of the fairly deep forecourt on the Zandstraat. Because of the short nave, the church makes a disproportionately tall impression.
The church possesses a very complete inventory, which has also suffered little damage in the 1960s.
Notable are the high altar, the pulpit, communion rail, confessionals, mosaics in the priest's choir, wall paintings and the stained-glass windows.
Description
The longitudinal axis of the church is oriented north-south with the priest's choir to the south and the entrance portal to the north. The neo-Romanesque cross basilica is built on a rectangular ground plan with very short transept arms that protrude only slightly beyond the side aisles. On the south side the choir bay has a five-fifteenths choir closure and ambulatory. On either side of the choir bay are flat-ceilinged chapels, which are connected to the priest's choir by openings closed with lintels. These are congregation chapels where one could participate in the service in a more enclosed manner. Against the left side gable chapel the sacristy is built, which is connected to the priest's choir by means of a protruding passageway. On the north side the portal with adjoining chapels was added in 1934.
The church is built of brick. Natural stone is used for the basement, string courses and coping stones. In the interior sandstone is used for the sculptured components, in particular the capitals of piers and small columns; black polished granite was chosen for the shafts of the columns in the central nave and of the small columns in the false triforium.
The masonry is executed in cross bond. A hardstone plinth runs all around.
The nave has a gabled roof with sloping roof slope of the choir. At its intersection with the gabled roof of the transept is a crossing tower inspired by the Rhineland. Lean-to roofs cover the side aisles. The roof surfaces are covered with slates in Maas covering. The wooden bell tower on the crossing is covered with slates in Rhine covering.
The symmetrical FRONT FACADE consists of the flush gable surfaces of the nave and side aisles against which the 'provisional' portal flanked by chapels is built, each under its own gabled roof. The entrance to the portal consists of a wooden double door with wrought-iron fittings, above which in the arch opening is a sandstone relief in a round arch frame. On either side of the entrance a round arch window. In the gable top, both of portal and flanking chapels, a rose window with stained glass. The gable surface above the portal, which is flanked by buttresses, contains round arch windows in triplet combination.
The LEFT SIDE FACADE shows the two bays of the nave and transept with on the left side the choir bay, choir closure and ambulatory and on the right side the protruding portal and chapel. The gable surface of the side aisle contains round arch windows. In the light bay of the nave round arch windows are arranged in triplet combination. In the transept three equal-height round arch windows are used as light bays and a rose window in the gable top. The sacristy is located on this side.
The REAR FACADE is formed by the protruding priest's choir which consists of a choir bay followed by a five-fifteenths closure in plan with choir ambulatory. In the choir are tall round arch windows with figurative stained glass. The lower choir ambulatory contains three times two small round arch windows. On either side of the choir are the congregation chapels, flanked by a small tower.
The RIGHT SIDE FACADE shows the two bays of the nave and transept with on the right side the choir bay, choir closure and ambulatory and on the left side the protruding portal and chapel. The gable surface of the side aisle contains round arch windows. In the light bay of the nave round arch windows are arranged in triplet combination. In the transept three equal-height round arch windows are used as light bays and a rose window in the gable top.
The INTERIOR is particularly well preserved. In the nave an alternating system is employed, which thanks to the forms and proportions used provides good spatial effect. Above the double arcade arches which have a round column with ornamented cubic capital as central support, runs across the full width of each central nave bay a blind dwarf gallery and an arch frieze with above it the light bay. The vaults are supported by round ribs which are caught by small columns in the inner corners of the cruciform piers and crossing piers. The church is entirely covered with brick cross-ribbed vaults and a dome vault resting on pendentives at the crossing. The entire interior is executed in fair-faced work except for the arch fields and spandrels on which mosaics or paintings are applied, including the cross-ribbed vaults and the pendentive dome at the crossing.
The choir bay differs in part from the wall structure in the nave; the arches are largely closed and the support point consists of a pier instead of a granite column. The arch fields are decorated with mosaics. The openings to the side chapels, internally covered with wooden ceilings, are closed straight at the top by lintels. To give the substructure of the choir a diaphanous upper section Franssen provided the high choir with a low ambulatory. It is not a true choir 'ambulatory', but an envelope that ends in a dead end at both ends. The ambulatory is fairly low and is lit by three pairs of small round arch windows that form a low-falling halo of light around the high altar surrounded by four granite columns. The columns in the choir closure have capitals of a conical form with relief decoration of stylised foliage. The church possesses a very complete inventory, which has also suffered little damage in the 1960s. Of importance are among others the high altar, the pulpit, communion rail, confessionals, mosaics in the priest's choir, wall paintings and the stained-glass windows.
