Inleiding
De in negentiende-eeuws TRADITIONALISME gebouwde GRAFKAPEL met GRAFKELDER van de familie Geradts staat centraal op het kerkhof te Posterholt. Het object beslaat een oppervlakte van 12m2. De grafkapel stamt uit 1865 en is een ontwerp van Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers in opdracht van Petrus Geradts. De grafkapel heeft een relatie met huis Aerwinkel te Posterholt. Reeds in 1856 ontwierp P.J.H. Cuypers voor Petrus Geradts - in leven onder andere rechter te Hasselt (B) - het huis Aerwinkel te Posterholt, beschermd. Zo is de vorm van de geleding van het bovenlicht van de entree van huis Aerwinkel gelijk aan die van de entree van de grafkapel.
Omschrijving
De GRAFKAPEL heeft een rechthoekige plattegrond in een bouwlaag onder een zadeldak met leienbedekking. Onder de dakrand bevinden zich houten consoles. De wanden zijn gepleisterd. Voor de voorgevel bevindt zich een trapbordes met aan iedere zijde drie trappen. Het trapbordes is aan iedere kant afgezet met een vierkante pijler. De entree van de grafkapel is een houten rechthoekige dubbele deur met een ijzeren deurrooster. De deur heeft een rondboogvormig geleed stalen bovenlicht met glas-in-loodraampjes. De vorm van de entreedeur wordt geaccentueerd door een decoratieve band. Boven de entreedeur bevindt zich een gevelsteen met een vierpas met daarin het jaartal 1865. Op de topgevel staat een smeedijzeren kruis.
In het EXTERIEUR van de grafkapel bevinden zich, met uitzondering van de achtergevel, geveldecoraties in de vorm van geometrische figuren, met name driehoeken. Deze driehoeken zijn steeds links en rechts van een gevelopening geplaatst. Bovendien bevindt zich in de topgevel een derde driehoek. In beide zijgevels zit een keperboogvormig venster.
De hoeken van de grafkapel worden gevormd door lisenen. Deze bezitten op de helft een verbreding en monden uit in een spitsuitlopende decoratie.
Het INTERIEUR van de grafkapel bezit decoratieve schilderingen. De wanden zijn gedecoreerd met een beige gekleurd imitatie steenverband; de voegen bestaan uit roodbruine biezen. Tot lambriseringhoogte is een dunne laag witte stuc aangebracht. Onder deze laag is een grijze afwerking zichtbaar. Boven de lambrisering zijn in dezelfde roodbruine kleur rechthoekige kaders geschilderd waarin bij overlijden van een familielid een tekst geschreven kon worden; een deel van de kaders is voorzien van een dergelijke tekst. De wanden worden bekroond door een met florale motieven gedecoreerde band langs het plafond.
Het plafond van een licht hellend puntdak wordt omzoomd door een decoratieve rand; in het midden is een veelkleurige ster aangebracht. Ook het front van het altaar en de omkadering van een boven het altaar in de muur uitgespaarde nis en de dagkanten van twee vensters in de wanden aan weerszijden van het altaar zijn beschilderd met florale motieven. Alle florale elementen zijn bedekt met een tweede decoratieve laag. Deze laag werd aangebracht nadat er schade was ontstaan als gevolg van vocht.
Het interieur van de kapel bevat verder o.a. een authentieke vloer van plavuizen, een kruisbeeld van aardewerk, een Mariabeeld alsmede een aantal authentieke kandelaars.
Onder de GRAFKAPEL bevindt zich de GRAFKELDER. De graftombe is te bereiken via een horizontaal geplaatste dubbele ijzeren luik, dat geplaatst is tegen het trapbordes. De grafkelder kent twaalf rustplaatsen in evenzoveel nissen. Elf nissen zijn bezet, uitgaande van de inscripties in de natuurstenen sluitstenen aan de kopse kanten.
Waardering
De architectuur-historische waarden van de grafkapel en grafkelder worden bepaald door de bijzondere plaats van het ontwerp binnen het oeuvre van architect Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers. Het object kent verder een bijzondere - decoratieve - vormgeving en samenhang van exterieur en interieur. De kapel bezit cultuur-historische waarde als uitdrukking van de typologische ontwikkeling van grafkapellen. De cultuur-historische waarde valt ook af te leiden uit de band met huis Aerwinkel, eveneens ontworpen door Dr. P.J.H. Cuypers in opdracht van Petrus Geradts.

Description
The BURIAL CHAPEL has a rectangular plan on one storey beneath a gabled roof with slate covering. Under the roof edge there are wooden consoles. The walls are plastered. In front of the main facade is a flight of steps with three staircases on each side. The flight of steps is bordered on each side with a square pillar. The entrance of the burial chapel is a wooden rectangular double door with an iron door grille. The door has a segmental arched glazed steel fanlight with leaded glass panes. The form of the entrance door is accentuated by a decorative band. Above the entrance door is a stone plaque with a quatrefoil containing the year 1865. On the gable peak stands a wrought iron cross.
In the EXTERIOR of the burial chapel there are, with the exception of the rear facade, facade decorations in the form of geometric figures, namely triangles. These triangles are always positioned to the left and right of a facade opening. Furthermore there is a third triangle in the gable peak. In both side facades there is a chevron-arched window.
The corners of the burial chapel are formed by pilasters. These have a widening at the midpoint and terminate in a pointed decoration.
The INTERIOR of the burial chapel possesses decorative paintings. The walls are decorated with a beige-coloured imitation stone bond; the joints consist of reddish-brown mortar lines. To wainscot height a thin layer of white stucco has been applied. Under this layer a grey finish is visible. Above the wainscot rectangular panels are painted in the same reddish-brown colour, in which, upon the death of a family member, a text could be written; part of the panels is provided with such a text. The walls are crowned by a band decorated with floral motifs along the ceiling.
The ceiling of a slightly sloped pitched roof is bordered by a decorative band; in the middle a multicoloured star is placed. Also the front of the altar and the framing of a niche recessed above the altar in the wall and the edges of two windows in the walls on either side of the altar are painted with floral motifs. All floral elements are covered with a second decorative layer. This layer was applied after damage had occurred as a result of moisture.
The interior of the chapel furthermore contains among other things an authentic floor of tiles, a crucifix of earthenware, a statue of Mary as well as a number of authentic candlesticks.
Beneath the BURIAL CHAPEL is the BURIAL VAULT. The grave is accessible via a horizontally placed double iron hatch, which is placed against the flight of steps. The burial vault has twelve resting places in as many niches. Eleven niches are occupied, based on the inscriptions in the natural stone closing stones at the end faces.
