Inleiding

Introduction

The SLUICE GATE with ROLLER BRIDGE received its flood-water retention function in 1924 after the drainage of the Carel Coenraadpolder. The sluice gate, nowadays called the "Grote Slapersluis", replaced an old drainage sluice from 1862, the so-called Reiderlander (inner) sluice. With the reclamation of the C.C. Polder, the old sluice was relocated to the east and received the name Buitenzeesluis. Between both sluices a canal was dug, the Boezemkanaal, which was also used as a sluice reservoir.

The sluice gate, which has been renewed in parts over the years, is located at the transition from the Reiderwolderpolder to the C.C. Polder in the middle of the open landscape and forms a bridge between the Hoofdkanaal and the Boezemkanaal. To the east of the sluice lies a dike breach renewed in 1992.

Description

SLUICE GATE which received its current form in 1924/25. The sluice consists of two concrete sluice heads with wooden guides and two pairs of sluice beam slots, a pair of wooden flood gates and a pair of wooden ebb gates (1925). The sluice gates are operated by means of four iron gear boxes with winches, and four iron push beams. On the south side of the sluice a remnant sluice basin with on the east side a wall of mortared trough vaults with cast iron posts.

The sluice heads are connected to each other by a ROLLER BRIDGE in the old style (renewed) with rigging. The bridge consists of a steel plate roadway with four iron wheels, welded steel railings, two iron lattice uprights with stay rods, and an iron gear box with winch. On the bridge a gate (not original).

Valuation

Sluice gate with roller bridge of general importance due to cultural-historical value

- as an example of a sluice gate from 1924/25 with a (renewed) roller bridge

- due to the historical relationship with the construction of the C.C. Polder

- due to the image-determining location in the open landscape
