Omschrijving
Inleiding.

Description
Introduction.
The THEATER with UPPER DWELLING is located on the eastern side of the Hooge Steenweg in the city centre of 's-Hertogenbosch. The originally medieval plot extends to the back street "Achter de Tolbrug". The theater was built in 1919 and displays stylistic elements of Art Deco and the Amsterdam School. The design was provided by The Hague architect A.J. Hekker, whose name is carved into the right side of the front facade. After the Second World War the building was used as a cinema (cinema "Luxor"). After the end of this post-war cinema function the building was repurposed as a shop. In this process the staircase on ground level was demolished. Of the former theater tower in the rear building, the top floor was demolished, whereby the rear building was lowered to the level of the hall. Its gabled roof was extended to the rear facade and two inserted storeys for technical rooms were removed. In 1991 the front facade at ground level was restored: the lantern fixtures above the shop front that had been removed in the post-war period were reinstalled.
Description.
The theater is constructed from a fairly narrow front building, in which the vestibule and foyer of the cinema were housed, with behind it a wider building section, in which the theater hall and the theater tower were located. The theater has three storeys. Beneath the front building presumably still (parts of) the cellar of a medieval building. The front building is closed off by a flat roof. Behind this follows an intermediate building with a light well and a projector room with flat roof, on which still remain parts of a transversely placed gabled roof. The former theater tower on the rear side is provided with a gabled roof. The front facade is executed in natural stone (sandstone and granite), the rear facade in brick.
The richly executed front facade has an open shop front, in which two round granite columns. In the shop front, above the windows and at the top of the facade are geometric decorative borders carved out of the natural stone. Above the shop front a slightly projecting, doubly-closed central section. In this on the first floor broad windows with fixed panel and sash window, on the second floor lower, narrower windows with sash windows. On either side of the central projection narrow windows with sash windows, at the height of the first floor with fixed panel.
On the second floor two wrought-iron flag holders. Above the shop front on the ground floor two wrought-iron lantern fixtures.
The rear facade consists of a brick stepped gable lowered in the post-war period. On the ground floor two (originally four) rear entrances, provided with modern doors (originally double doors). In the centre two three-light windows in place of the former doors. At the height of the stage a large double door. Above this, at the location of the former inserted storey above the stage two slightly projecting, doubly-closed bay windows, with between them a small balcony with wrought-iron decorative railing. At both ends of the rear facade two narrow, vertical wall recesses, in which narrow tall windows, provided with diagonal, diamond-shaped glazing bars. In the lowered gable top two not original, narrow tall single-pane windows. The interior of the former theater has been partly altered by the post-war renovations: the original layout of the front building with hall, vestibule, ticket office on the ground floor and foyer with buffet on the first floor is no longer recognizable. The staircase in the hall has been removed at the height of the ground floor. In the light well remnants of the staircase on the floor and the original toilet rooms are still present. Of the upper dwelling on the second floor the original layout has been largely maintained. The former theater hall is closed off by a curved stucco vault, in which curved neon tubes, probably dating from the nineteen-fifties of the 20th century. In the walls of the hall rounded arch recesses. In the former hall the balcony is still present.
Also the original interior finishing is still present in various places. Of which are notably of importance: panels in the still remaining stair balustrades at the height of the first floor, tile wainscot in the corridor adjoining the staircase and the toilet rooms on the first floor, in the upper dwelling wooden wainscotings, stair, moulded door frames, furthermore the window sills, fireplace and the stucco ceiling in the living room. In the former hall the curved stucco ceiling with round ventilation channels is still present, rounded arch recesses in the side walls. Panel wainscotings against the walls of the balcony.
Assessment.
The former theater is of general interest. The theater has cultural-historical value as a particular expression of a socio-economic development: the theater forms a good illustration of the increasing importance of cultural facilities in 's-Hertogenbosch as a result of increased prosperity in the early 20th century. Furthermore, the building is of importance as an illustration of the development of the theater building type. The former theater is of importance because of the striking mixture of Art Deco and Amsterdam School elements, because of the rich detailing in these styles and because of the particular use of materials, notably the rich application of natural stone in the front facade and brick in decorative bond in the rear facade. The theater possesses ensemble value because of the importance of this prominent building for the appearance of the city centre. The theater is finally of importance because of typological and functional rarity.
