Description
Introduction
RESIDENTIAL HOUSE from 1916-1918 in the style of Transitional Architecture designed by architect A. Schmidt Zn. The house was built on the instructions of Iz. Groenewegen. Along the front facade a hardstone pavement.
Description
The residential house has a rectangular floor plan and is constructed in brick over three storeys and a mezzanine with a hipped roof covered with tuile-du-Nord. The third storey extends only over half the depth of the building. The second storey has in its rear half a lantern with glazed gabled roof.
The front facade has on the left a projecting section extending the full height of the facade which is crowned with an eight-sided small tower, the spire of which is covered with slates in Maas bonding. All windows have roller blinds at the top and hardstone sills at the bottom and wooden sash windows. The right bay is marked off with a projecting moulded roof cornice on brackets. On the right corner a small chimney. In the projecting section a porch above steps with rounded hardstone treads and a hardstone platform. Front door with fanlights and side lights with glazing bars and leaded glass windows. Sandstone porch ceiling. The entrance is crowned by a pediment in the front facade with engraved decorations. Above the entrance on both storeys a T-window with leaded glass fanlight and two hardstone setting stones. The tower has an embattled gutter line beneath which are two standing small windows with leaded glass.
In the right bay at basement level two grille windows and on the ground floor two arched windows. On the first floor right an oriel with bevelled sides resting on iron beams. Along the lower edge an embattled dentil course. Above it is a balcony with an openwork mortared balustrade with a hardstone edge. The stuccoed ceiling of the partly integrated balcony is marked off with a wooden beam resting on keystone pieces of sandstone. Opening onto the balcony are doors with side lights and fanlights with glazing bars and leaded glass.
On the rear facade on the left a conservatory with glazed lean-to roof. Double doors with side lights with glazing bars. On the floor above a balcony with wooden balustrade. Right a projecting section with glazed door and two-light window with fanlights. On the floor above a T-window.
The interior is well preserved and has several special elements. In the draught vestibule and in the corridor white marble floors and wall panelling of red marble. In the draught vestibule the side walls are tiled with Art Deco relief tiles and a glazed door is fitted with cut glass. The interconnecting rooms have beautifully painted stuccoed ceilings with medallion and leaf motifs. The sliding doors with built-in cupboards are intact on the floor above, but have been altered on the ground floor. The kitchen is tiled with stencilled decoration and has a barrel vault of glazed brick. The conservatory and kitchen have granito floors. On the landing a skylight with leaded glass with stylised flower motifs.
