Omschrijving
Inleiding

Description
Introduction
The villa at Havenstraat 17 in Maasbracht was built at the end of the nineteenth century in the style of ECLECTICISM with elements of the CHALET STYLE. The building has always had a direct relationship with the harbour, which exerted great appeal to commerce. The harbour is situated in the immediate vicinity of the building. The first owner was a wool merchant who donated the building to his cousin, a seed merchant, in 1929. The building is entirely surrounded by walls, has two gate entrances and is surrounded by extensive grounds. Around 1990, an extension was added to the rear facade serving as a toilet. In the RIGHT SIDE FACADE as seen from the street, there is a bay window from 1947.
Description
The villa does not have a regular floor plan. On an elongated section with gabled roof is placed a square structure with hipped roof which ends in the rear facade as a gabled roof. In the front facade, centrally located at the transition from the gabled roof to the hipped roof, a tower is placed with a tent roof. All roofs have Maas tiling with slate. Roof crests are still present on the roofs. The building has a facing in brick in various shades of red and comprises three storeys. The brickwork is executed in English bond. The projecting plinth is plastered. The entire building has plastered horizontal bands in the facades and plastered quoins. In the facade openings, unless otherwise stated, there are rounded arched windows with the same openings with filler panels and aluminium rectangular T-windows with natural stone sills.
In the FRONT FACADE the right section projects forward. On the first and second storey there are each two windows and a round wooden window beneath the chalet-like roof overhang. To the left of the projecting section, set back, is a porch, supported on a decorative column. Within it is placed the entrance: a double wooden door with wooden decorations and a rounded arched fanlight with leaded glass. The porch is accessed via three natural stone steps and has a marble floor of alternating black and white tiles. The porch is closed off with a balustrade. Above the porch is a balcony, enclosed by an identical balustrade. The balcony doors are bricked up and replaced by a rectangular wooden window with leaded glass. Above this facade section is a round window. This facade section ends in a constricted tower with wrought iron crest. The tower roof is supported by wooden consoles.
To the left of the entrance are found two windows in the first storey and a wooden roof dormer in the second storey, placed in the hipped roof. The roof line is thereby interrupted. Under the roof is decorative brickwork in larger blocks: roof consoles.
The LEFT SIDE FACADE has in the centre a bay window extension with balustrade and ends in a gable with a round wooden window. The facade sections to the left and right of the bay window are blank and are interrupted by horizontal plastered bands. With the exception of the gable, we also find here decorative brickwork in larger blocks: roof consoles. The bay window has on the two facades facing the street an unglazed window with fanlight. The bay window is accessible by means of a rectangular wooden door in the third facade section on the rear side. In the facade section above the balustrade we find a large double window with fanlight.
The REAR FACADE has two chalet-like roof overhangs with a section of hipped roof between them. The facade section with roof overhang placed against the hipped roof projects forward and has two large windows and a small window on the first storey and a window on the second storey beneath the roof overhang. For the recessed section, a sanitary extension was added around 1990. As a result, a door opening in the facade is hidden and only the fanlight with wrought iron grille is visible. In the section of hipped roof still visible is a roof dormer with constricted turret and decorative brickwork under the roof edge: masonry consoles. The facade section ending with the second chalet-like roof overhang is a copy of the facade section in the front facade and contains two windows in both the first and second storey and a round wooden window beneath the roof overhang. The windows on the first storey of the rear facade have roller shutters from around 1990.
The RIGHT SIDE FACADE on the first storey has a bay window from 1947 and a window on the second storey.
To the left of the building is a detached garage building under a gabled roof with a segmental arched door. To the left and right of the door are two wooden windows with fanlight placed. Above the door is a round wooden window with glazing bars in four panes.
The spacious grounds surrounding the building are enclosed at the front by a wrought iron fence with two gate entrances. The fence is placed on a brick wall and between brick columns. The other three sides of the grounds are enclosed by means of a high brick garden wall.
The INTERIOR of the building contains valuable components such as, among others, an authentic marble floor in the hall, authentic wooden staircase and wooden floors in the living room and the drawing room. In the hall, the reception room, the living room and the drawing room are rosettes on the ceilings and stucco work decorations above the doors and on the columns. The structure of the building is largely unchanged.
