Inleiding
PAKHUIS (voormalige grutterij), gebouwd in 1875 gelegen in de kern van de middeleeuwse vestingstad. In de voorgevel is een stichtingssteen aangebracht: "DE EERSTE STEEN GELEGD DOOR ?.?. VAN DEN MAATEN, 11 JUNI 1875".
De voorzijde van het pand sluit met de rooilijn aan op de uit veldkeien bestaande en met klinkers ingevulde bestrating. Het is met de rechter zijgevel verbonden met de aangrenzende bebouwing. Links ligt de gevel vrij door de aanwezigheid van een brandgang die door een smal getoogd poortje toegankelijk is. De achterzijde van het pand bezit een ondiepe binnenhof waarop ook het pand erachter aansluit.
De Smeesteeg die vanuit het noordwesten in zuidoostelijke richting loopt, ligt ten noorden van en parallel aan de Beekstraat die een van de twee elkaar kruisende hoofdassen vormt, die aansluiten op de uitvalswegen buiten de vestingmuren.
Omschrijving
Het pand bezit een rechthoekige plattegrond die bijna het gehele perceel beslaat; drie bouwlagen telt en een zolderverdieping. De gevels zijn opgetrokken in baksteen en gemetseld in kruisverband. Alleen de achtergevel is tot de zolderverdieping van een later aangebrachte pleisterlaag voorzien. De nok van het met rode oud Hollandse pan gedekte zadeldak, is haaks op de straat geplaatst. Het hemelwater wordt aan de linker zijgevel door zinken (vernieuwde) mastgoten afgevoerd. Ter plaatse van de verdiepingsvloeren komen in de vier gevels schotelmuurankers voor.
De a-symmetrisch ingedeelde VOORGEVEL bezit op de begane grond links een moderne deur onder een in het muurwerk voorkomende steense segmentboog. Rechts hiervan is een in verhouding te grote, later aangebrachte schuifdeur voor het magazijn geplaatst. De tweede en derde bouwlaag zijn identiek en worden van elkaar gescheiden door een geschilderde band waarop, over een eerdere tekst nu "industrie en handelsonderneming" is te lezen. In de middenas komen boven elkaar gesitueerde luiken met dubbele deuren met ruiten voor. Ter weerszijden is een negen ruits ijzeren raam gesteld, waarvan de bovenste drie ruitjes als valraam zijn uitgevoerd. De getoogde opgeklampte luiken sluiten eveneens getoogde ramen af onder een steens segmentboog. De ramen rusten op een uitgemetselde lekdorpel, de houten onderdorpels van de luiken zijn van een zinken kap voorzien. De zolderverdieping bevat in tegenstelling tot de eerder genoemde luiken nog wel de oorspronkelijke (ruitloze) deuren. Links en rechts bevindt zich een rondvenster met een door kruisroede gedeeld raam, omgord door een koppenlaag. Onder de schuine dakrand van de puntgevel komen een vijftal muurvlechtingen voor die echter niet tot in de kruin doorlopen en mogelijk op een wijziging van het muurwerk duiden.
De LINKER ZIJGEVEL bezit alleen in de tweede bouwlaag twee en in de derde bouwlaag drie vensters met achtruits kantelramen, die echter niet onder elkaar zijn geplaatst en alle door een steens segmentboog worden afgesloten. De ramen rusten op een uitgemetselde lekdorpel.
De ACHTERGEVEL is zoals vermeld, deels gepleisterd en bezit een gecementeerde plint. In de eerste bouwlaag komt een niet-oorspronkelijk tweeruits klapraam voor. In de tweede en derde bouwlaag bevinden zich twee identieke vensters overeenkomstig het type in de linker zijgevel. De geveltop is identiek aan die van de voorgevel maar de vlechtingen reiken hier wel tot in de kruin van de topgevel.
De RECHTER ZIJGEVEL is voor wat betreft het gedeelte boven het dak van de aangrenzende bebouwing identiek aan de linker zijgevel.
Het INTERIEUR bezit zware houten verdiepingsbalken en planken vloerdelen. De kap is beschoten en op de zolder zijn het houten hijsrad en de hijsstoel bewaard gebleven. Vermoedelijk ontbreekt in het exterieur ter hoogte van de geveltop, de hijsbalk.
Waardering
- Van architectuurhistorische waarde als voorbeeld van een in gave hoofdvorm goed bewaard pakhuis uit de tweede helft van de 19de eeuw. Het pand valt op door zijn hoogte en zijn vorm. Het exterieur bezit esthetische kwaliteiten zoals gave verhoudingen en materiaalgebruik. Het interieur vertoont grotendeels zijn oorspronkelijke indeling.

Introduction
WAREHOUSE (former grocery shop), built in 1875 located in the core of the medieval walled town. In the front facade a foundation stone has been placed: "THE FIRST STONE LAID BY ?.?. VAN DEN MAATEN, 11 JUNE 1875".
The front of the building aligns with the building line made of field stones and filled in with clinker pavers. It is connected on the right side gavel with the adjacent buildings. The building has a rectangular floor plan that occupies almost the entire plot; it has three storeys and an attic storey. The facades are built in brick and mortared in Flemish bond. Only the rear facade is provided with a plaster layer applied later up to the attic storey. The ridge of the gabled roof covered with red old Dutch tile is placed perpendicular to the street. The rainwater is discharged at the left side facade by (renewed) zinc gutters. At the level of the floor joists ornamental wall anchors appear in all four facades.
The asymmetrically arranged FRONT FACADE has on the ground floor on the left a modern door under a stone segmental arch occurring in the masonry. To the right of this a disproportionately large, later installed sliding door for the warehouse has been placed. The second and third storeys are identical and are separated from each other by a painted band on which, over an earlier text now "industry and commerce" can be read. In the central axis shutters with double doors with panes are positioned one above the other. On either side a nine-pane iron window is placed, with the top three panes executed as a hopper window. The arched clamped shutters likewise close off arched windows under a stone segmental arch. The windows rest on a projecting sill, the wooden sub-sills of the shutters are provided with a zinc cap. The attic storey contains, in contrast to the aforementioned shutters, the original (paneless) doors. Left and right there is a round window with a window divided by a cross-mullion, bordered by a course of headers. Under the slanting eaves of the gable come five wall braiding courses which, however, do not extend through to the apex and may indicate an alteration to the masonry.
The LEFT SIDE FACADE has windows only in the second storey two and in the third storey three windows with rear-hung casement windows, which however are not placed one above the other and all are closed off by a stone segmental arch. The windows rest on a projecting sill.
The REAR FACADE is, as mentioned, partly plastered and has a cemented plinth. In the first storey there is a non-original two-pane side-hung window. In the second and third storeys there are two identical windows corresponding to the type in the left side facade. The gable top is identical to that of the front facade but the braiding courses here extend through to the apex of the gable.
The RIGHT SIDE FACADE is, as regards the section above the roof of the adjacent buildings, identical to the left side facade.
The INTERIOR has heavy wooden floor joists and wooden plank floors. The roof truss is covered and on the attic the wooden hoist wheel and hoist chair are preserved. Presumably missing on the exterior at the height of the gable top is the hoist beam.
Appreciation
- Of architectural historical value as an example of a well-preserved warehouse in its essential form from the second half of the 19th century.
