Inleiding

Description
Introduction
GRAVE MONUMENT on the Algemene Begraafplaats in Brummen, erected around 1880 for Marius Boogaardt, the only son of the wealthy planter Frederick Boogaardt, owner of the Brummense estate Groot-Engelenburg. On 23 September 1880 the young schoolboy was abducted and murdered in Den Haag. This dramatic event received national attention, particularly when the writer Multatuli accused his son Edu of being the possible perpetrator.
The body of Marius was interred in the family burial vault in Brummen, where a grave monument was erected for him. The cemetery is located in the hamlet of Rhienderen, on the northwestern edge of the village. The terrain is bounded by the Voorsterweg, the Prinses Irenelaan and the Dieren-Zutphen railway line. The grave is the most richly executed grave, situated on the nineteenth-century section of this cemetery, on one of the main paths, near a crossing with monumental horse chestnuts. The cemetery itself is not protected. The monument is executed in Neo-Classical style and is surrounded by fencing in Neo-Gothic manner. It is furnished with a rarely occurring cast-iron baldachin. The applied classical theme of the broken column symbolises the transience of life, or more specifically points to a life cut short too early. The motif was often used in the late nineteenth century as an independent grave monument. Here the motif appears in a more elaborate form, as part of a composition with a mourning, classical female figure.
Description
The GRAVE MONUMENT consists of a natural stone grave sculpture placed behind a recumbent gravestone of white marble, bearing the inscription 'Burial vault of the F. Boogaardt family'. The grave sculpture and gravestone are covered by an iron baldachin with barrel vault, borne by six slender cast-iron columns. The flattened hipped roof of the canopy is now covered with shingles. Outside the canopy, a yew tree is placed on either side of the grave sculpture. The whole is surrounded by iron fencing with a double swing gate on the side of the path. The fencing is detailed in Neo-Gothic manner. The vertical bars end in pointed trefoil arches and the thicker iron fence posts are crowned with pinnacles. The grave sculpture is placed on a rectangular plinth and a larger rectangular base. A classically dressed, kneeling female figure clasps a broken column mourning with both arms. On the plinth of the column can be read: 'In memory of Frederick Marius Bogaardt / born 23 May 1867 / died 23 September 1880 / his parents, sisters / and / the schoolchildren of 's-Gravenhage'. Several withered roses lie in front of this epitaph.
Evaluation
GRAVE MONUMENT from 1880 for Marius Bogaardt on the Algemene Begraafplaats.
- Of art-historical value as a rich and well-preserved example of a grave monument from the end of the nineteenth century, which stands out due to the rarely occurring cast-iron baldachin, the fencing detailed in Neo-Gothic manner and the exceptional grave sculpture executed in Neo-Classical style.
- Of urban design value because of the location of the grave on the old section of the cemetery, where because of its special form it plays a distinctive role. The grave possesses ensemble values with the older part of the cemetery, which has characteristic planting including monumental trees and where simply executed but typical late nineteenth-century graves are located.
- Of cultural-historical value as a representative stage in the development of grave monuments. The theme of the severed column occurs mainly as an independent motif, but in this richly executed monument it is applied in combination with a symbolically intended classical female figure.
