Inleiding
Vrijstaand HERENHUIS, gebouwd omstreeks 1900 in een traditionele stijl met eclecticistische elementen. Het pand is gebouwd aan de noordzijde van de historische binnenstad, tegen de omwalling en op de locatie van het voormalige fort Sanderbout. Het huis bevindt zich in de zuidwestelijke hoek van de ommuurde kavel. De bomschade aan het pand werd in 1945 hersteld. In 1995 is de zuidgevel opnieuw gestuct, waarbij de oorspronkelijke imitatievoegen zijn verdwenen.
Omschrijving
Herenhuis met gedeeltelijke souterrainverdieping, drie BOUWLAGEN en vliering op een vierkante PLATTEGROND. Het huis wordt gedekt door een gewelfd TENTDAK met Tuiles du Nord. Bakgoten op consoles. Schoorsteen op het oostelijke dakvlak, dakvenster op het westelijke dakvlak aan de Paardestraat. Het pand heeft een gepleisterde plint, een bakstenen optrek in kruisverband met gesneden voegen, gesausde hardstenen dorpels, gestucte venster- en deurlijsten, gestucte bakgootconsoles. Houten vensters en deuren.
Twee decoratieve GEVELS, één aan de westelijke Paardestraatzijde en één aan de noordelijke tuinzijde, symmetrisch van opbouw en beëindigd door bakstenen hoeklisenen. Per bouwlaag drie segmentboogvormige houten T-vensters met geornamenteerde stijlen, in stuclijsten. Deze stuclijsten zijn in de eerste laag voorzien van schelpkuiven en krullen, in de tweede laag van halfronde frontons, in de derde laag met architraaflijsten. De entree, in de middenas van de noordgevel aan de tuinzijde, heeft een segmentboogvormige dubbele houten paneeldeur met bovenlicht en twee hardstenen traptreden. De west- en noordgevel eindigen in een bakstenen kroonlijst met diverse ornamenten en gestucte bakgootconsoles.
De zuid- en oostgevel worden begrensd door verkorte lisenen onder een kroonlijst. De ZUIDGEVEL aan de walzijde is blind en is gestuct. De bakstenen OOSTGEVEL, met een onregelmatige indeling, heeft in de noordelijke gevelhelft twee bovenelkaar liggende segmentboogvormige T-vensters en een segmentboogvormige dubbele houten tuindeur met bovenlicht. Strekken en hardstenen dorpels. In de zuidelijke gevelhelft zijn per bouwlaag twee kleine rechthoekige vensters geplaatst. De gevel toont verschillende kleuren metselwerk, door verbouwing.
Aan de westzijde, langs de Paardestraat staat een BAKSTEENMUUR met steunberen, gestucte pijlers met vazen en een dubbel smeedijzeren hek. Aan de zuidelijke walzijde wordt het perceel omgeven door een oude bakstenen keermuur.
De indeling van het INTERIEUR, gekenmerkt door een centrale gang met paneeldeuren, is ten dele gewijzigd. In dit interieur zijn onder meer van belang de resterende plafonds met stuclijsten en ornamenten; de marmeren haardlijsten; de gangboog voor het trappenhuis, met twee engelen die een wapenschild dragen; het trappenhuis. Het souterrain wordt gekenmerkt door bakstenen troggewelven tussen ijzeren I-profielen.

Het herenhuis aan de Paardestraat 31 is van cultuurhistorische waarde als bijzondere uitdrukking van een typologische ontwikkeling. The brick EAST FACADE, with an irregular arrangement, has in the northern facade half two superimposed segmental arch-shaped T-windows and a segmental arch-shaped double wooden garden door with fanlight. Stretchers and hardstone thresholds. In the southern facade half two small rectangular windows are placed per storey. The facade shows different colours of brickwork, due to alterations.
On the west side, along the Paardestraat stands a BRICK WALL with buttresses, stuccoed pillars with urns and a double wrought-iron gate. On the southern wall side the plot is surrounded by an old brick retaining wall.
The layout of the INTERIOR, characterised by a central corridor with panelled doors, has been partly altered. In this interior are notably important the remaining ceilings with stucco frames and ornaments; the marble fireplace surrounds; the barrel vault above the stairwell, with two angels bearing a coat of arms; the stairwell. The basement is characterised by brick barrel vaults between iron I-section beams.
